Windows ME question

I plan to upgrade from Win 95. What are the pros and cons of upgrading to ME as opposed to Win 98? Also, I see upgrade disks being sold at auction sites. Some are “used”. Doesn’t that mean that they may have been registered and that they are essentially useless?

Forget ME, it’s very slow. W98 is nice. I dont know about the used disks, they should come with a letter of transfer, though.

Whistler is supposed to come out soon, the most stable version of windows known to man.

WinME is hell on earth. The only decision is whether to upgrade to 98 or 2000, or to wait for XP. I like 2000 of all of the options; it’s stable and reliable, but you will have to reinstall all of your applications. These used CD’s are people that used them and now don’t ‘need’ the CD anymore, so they are selling them. If they undo the upgrade, then they are legal. Otherwise, they are pirates of the electron sea, bound to a life of lost souls…

I read an article in a newspaper about a year ago, before I bought my home computer and before I was computer knowledgeable (which I still ain’t). The writer was not that enthused over it, as I remember, and pointed out some problems. I don’t remembe what they were, since I wasn’t that versed in computers.

Anyway, I bought an ME directly from Dell last October, and never could get a dial-up connection, even with a new modem installed. I went to cable, and had no problems until a couple of weeks ago, when my hard drive crashed. The support guy heard the hard drive on the phone and said that I need a new one, that’s going to crash any minute. It crashed the next day. So I got a new one put in. I could not get it operating right away. The support guy had me run some tests and noted there was a ? by the modem. He couldn’t get that straightened out. But that was the dial-up modem which I don’t use anyway. So I said, “Forget it.” I don’t use it. I got the PC working merely by unplugging and replugging some attachments.

Anyway, it’s working now, but I pushed the power button too hard yesterday, and it became stuck down. I got it going, but it is in there askew. I suppose I could straighten it out with a tiny screwdriver, or from the inside, if I can’t get it going again.

Other than that,I’ve had no problems.

Windows ME does have a Restore Windows feature. This enables you to go back to any date and restore the hard drive as it was on that date. I suppose it may come in handy.

Personally, I have not had any problems with ME as opposed to 98. My system boots faster then 98, otherwise everything seems about the same. I know another person that has not had such luck with it and curses the birth of the programmers who “spewed forth the vile lines of code responsible for the reprehensible pile of pig vomit that is Windows Millenium.” Hmmm.

I don’t agree, but I don’t have a problem. But I am also using an 800MHz Athlon with 256 MB RAM, opposed to the 300MHZ K6/64 MB RAM they used.

As for the “used” discs, be very careful. If it seems like too cheap of a price, it probably is. Many times this will net you a home burned cd with a hacked cd-key. If you do buy a used package, make sure you get ALL the documentation and papers and stickers, etc. that came with the disc. If you get a CD and nothing else, you were screwed. In short, if you get all the papers and the Certificate of Authenticity from the software, you then “own” the license to use that copy of the software. Call 1-800-RU-LEGIT(Microsoft anti-piracy) to find out if you recieved all the information and to verify your product is real Microsoft product.

My new computer is running ME and it is up and running before my old computer (W95) could get to the logo screen. I did have some problems with the manufacturer (HP) having loaded way too many drivers (Ghost Drivers in the sky…) and I just got that taken care of. I’ll have to run for a few days to see if that solved the problem I was having (screen would go black except for a series of short green vertical lines evenly spaced running across the top of the screen).

Good evening friends,

I upgraded to windows ME, with a couple of minor problems.

the problems turned out to be the drivers for some of my software were incompatible with widows ME. a short trip to the manufactures web sites to download new drivers and evry thing is running well.

the article dicussing windows ME upgrade issues can be found here

this article explains which devices and software are incompatible, and how to correct the problems.

A friend of mine is experiencing a great deal of trouble with her windows ME, is it possible to convert back to win 98? If so what would be your advice in doing so.

Win98SE is the most stable user-friendly windows platform. It also has the most compatibility with software and hardware.

Win2000 is the best O/S if you know what you’re doing, but there are a few companies that don’t put out suppport for Win2000 (such as drivers or software.)

WinME was Microsoft’s way of stalling for time… “erm, yeah… it’s… uh… NEW! you should… uh ::squints and reads que card:: BUY IT! Yeah… Oh yeah, everything works on it…”
Hopefully whistler/Whisper/XP whatever they’re gonna end up calling it will do what they said ME was supposed to do, but I’m under the impression that ME was put out their just to pad Microsoft’s pockets so they could get XP out.

broccoli!

First if you are upgrading from 95, you cannot put a full version of Me on.

Just think next time you get a HD, you first have to put 95 on then put on Me. Yuck.
