me

Well, not really me, but Windows ME. I just took my official training on it. It’s pretty damn cool, even for Microsoft. Sorry, I had to share, there really is no point.

Any questions?

Maybe I should have rephrased that…

I just took my Windows ME training, and I’m dying to share my newfound knowledge…

Any questions?

Am I going to need new drivers for all my hardware, or will my Win98 drivers work?

Well, give us the lowdown. Is there anything new and exciting? I’m hoping for more GPFs myself, but probobly they just included more “illegal operations” for me.

No really, is there anything worth having in the update?
Zette

Drivers… I imagine the 98 drivers would work. But you’ll definately want to check for updates.

I don’t know about more GPF’s, but I did leave thinking the OS should be a lot more stable then 98/95. (Thats the OS, not any software you add on). I’m sure they have a few new illegal operations built in for you though.

They were tauting it as having the ability to boot up faster. Does this work?

And most importantly, can you still play DOS based games?

With no startup group items (and a computer that has a compliant BIOS of 14 seconds or less) You can get to a desktop in 30 seconds. Even without the compliant bios, it should still be considerably faster.

Real Mode is almost nonexistent. You can NOT get to a command prompt without a boot disk. You can use a dosshell within Windows, but thats it. I don’t know if you can still use dos games. For you DOS lovers this is bad news. My guess is that by next release DOS will be totally gone.

Has the Add/Remove programs bit been upgraded like it was for Windows2000 - like with all the tracking of programs used, etc?

I think I am going to upgrade to ME, but, I haven’t seen a lot so far that makes me believe it is all that different from Win98. I would go to Win2000 but it doesn’t support a few pieces of hardware I have (most importantly my DVD-Decoder card).

So, I guess the question is, WHY should I upgrade to WinME?

I’ve been using ME for about 8 months now, and I love it. I was running the beta for a while and the thing I loved about it was how stable it was… until it finally crashed.

The bitch is that once it crashes, you’re screwed. It gives you no sign of danger until it’s all over. BUT - that was the beta. I’ve had no trouble since I upgraded to the OEM.

DOS programs do run, but unlike Win98 where it was actually shelling to DOS (since Win9x still was a DOS based GUI), it’s more like it’s EMULATING DOS… Running a completely separate program to handle DOS only applications… In other words, when you run a DOS app, you’re running a program within a program within a program… So it uses much more memory. But, it’s a slick OS and handles it well…

Of course, I have 256M of RAM, and I’m running an Athlon Thunderbird 750 clocked at a Gig… I ran the beta on my old PII-350 with 98M of RAM, and it was fine too ( in fact much faster than Win98). So I have a lot of experience with ME and PIIs and AMDS processors.

So, lemme put in my “me too!” and say, I’ll answer questions as well, Screeme.

Farris J Goldstein

Farris- I was really impressed with it. I didn’t know what to expect, and I was surprised at how nice it seemed to be. I didn’t upgrade to 98 because I figured why bother for msconfig and a few goodies. Now I wish I could get ME on my system.

Clark- ME is going to be a lot more stable than 98. The look will be very similar. But a lot of things are going to be easier and more user friendly, even within the similar features. (Programs list only shows most common componants selected… thumbnail view… etc.) There are actually features from tweakui built into ME.

I’d say you want it because it is infinately more stable, and a LOT easier to use. Plus a restore program that is top notch! (much more effective than good ol’ scanreg)

Screeme

Wait, now I’m confused. I thought you already had ME?

Farris… you said it was special, how could you forget! j/k…

No, I took my “official” ME training, and learned all the in’s and outs of it. (Why they got rid of sfc, etc.)

Got to play around with it and stuff…

Screeme

Shhhhhh, not on MPSIMS!

But seriously, was this for your job or something? Is your company planning to run ME on your computers at work? That would be kinda silly if you ask me.

FJG

Yes, its for my job. I am technical support for a major computer manufacturer. So I am required to learn all about it.
