Windows ME

I just installed Windows Millenium Edition (ME) today. It looks exactly the same, runs slower and now I have no sound (even though the control panel says it is fine and dandy). Plus it messed up all my desktop settings. What a PITA for a few updated drivers and system protection.

Anybody else took the leap yet? Plan on it? Thoughts? Comments?

Hell no! I’m dissapointed enough with goddam Win 98 that I’m going to learn Linux and get rid of the whole freakin’ mess!

How do you have Windows ME already? It isn’t supposed to be released until September 14.

Microsoft Developer’s Network. I get the releases early cuz I have to write drivers for it.

Oh yeah…I remember reading about that awhile back.

I’ve actually gotten a lot out of Win98–the FAT32 file system in particular. I noticed quite a few bugs corrected from Win95 too.

I’ve given a lot of thought to upgrading though. To tell the truth, it’s my favorite OS–and yes, I have used linux. I guess it’s because I’m accustomed to Windows and all things it can provide–good and bad.

I’m actually waiting for people like you to test it out for me. In a few months when it’s been out for a while, and it’s destroyed a few other peoples systems, after they come up with whatever patches and fixes and second editions, that’s when i’ll get it.
Until then, My Win98 and Linux dual boot fancy me just fine.

I installed Me about a week ago, and it seems to be more stable. It also boots a lot quicker, but some things about it piss me off.

For example, all the core files are protected. So let’s say that kernel32.dll gets corrupted somehow, even though that’s supposedly impossible. You can’t re-extract it, no matter what you do. You can’t even boot into DOS and delete it and then re-copy it. You can’t extract it in DOS either. You can, but it doesn’t work.

I do tech stuff for a living, and have been fully trained on Me, and some things still just make me scratch my head. I think that I’m going to back up all my mp3s, and low-level format the thing, then re-partition it, then format it, then re-install 98. A regular format won’t get rid of Me, because it’s a different file system. You have to totally wipe out the drive to put anything other than Me on it.

Knock on wood and all that, but I had 0 problems with 98. Never had even 1 lock-up, nothing, in almost a year of normal use. Sounds weird, but it’s true.
Anyway, I think I’ll keep my copy of Me, but not install it till I have taken enough calls about it to find out all the bugs that are undoubtedly inherent to it.
I’m not going to use it until they come out with a newer revision, just like DOS, just like 3.1, just like 95, just like 98.
It’s just habit when dealing with stuff from Microsoft.

Well, 95 OSR2 with Fat32 filesustem always worked the best for me. 98 was a hunk of crap, slow, had memory problems, so I never used it on my machines(I’ve seen the wonderful stuff it can do on my brothers laptop…Oy).

I upgraded to Win2K pro, and there’s no going back. I’ve had a single lockup, and no system troubles.

ME is 95 with a few protections and other stuff I’ll probably never use. The file protections, for me, are nothing but a bugger. I like having access to all of my files.

Also, isn’t ME a non-networkable OS?(forgot to mention I got a copy of ME from an associate in IT :D)

I have Win95 OSR2 on one machine and WIN98 on the other and they both run fine (well, as fine as you can expect). But they are both clean full installs, not upgrades. I have heard from people upgrading and haviong problems.

I think I’m on my 4th or 5th round of upgrade burnout. I’ve got NT 4.0 (SP6) working just fine on most of my machines, with one (this one) still on W95. I think I’ve spent 5 of the last 10 years upgradin’ stuff. Just switching to Windows 3.0 screwed a lot of my (then) software library.

Ack! Oh well, take me to the future…

Man, Xizor. Sucks to be you! I got it two weeks ago, along with Motocross Madness 2, free. I’m (at least, I was) just a retail guy for Best Buy, too! :stuck_out_tongue:

Anyways, it seems to run somewhat faster, zero lockups (so far) where 98 had a jabakillion lockups, and I like the added options. I DON’T like alot of the dumbing down I’ve had to undo because of all the protection needed against the SUV driving, cell phone talking, soccer practice going, brain dead to all stimulus public.

Although Win98 suits my purposes for now, I still want to get Win2k and WinME. I’m getting Linux soon, so I will be able to learn all these OSes…after all, the more versatile you are, the more likely you are to get a good career in technology.
