Should I watch Ads of YouTube channels I like

Doing some research, if I skip ads, the youtube channels that I subscribe to don’t get money. I usually just skip them whenever I get a chance. Should I just let them play so the channel gets money?

Most of my subscriptions are people in Thailand, and if just letting the ads play help them, I’m cool with it. I don’t want my skipping the ads to cause them to lose money.

I don’t, but I do support the creators I like the most using Patreon. Even $1 a month is more than they’ll get from any ads I watch. I prioritize those who need the money more, based on how much they make and how many people are involved.

If Patreon isn’t an option, you might be able to sponsor someone on YouTube. (I think that’s what they call it.) There’s also always YouTube Premium, which is $10 a month, which does give them more money.

But, yeah, if you want, you can let the ads play to help support them. Though, personally, I would not actually watch the ads.

If you’re asking in a moral sense: I personally don’t feel bad if I don’t support somebody who already has a lot of money, but I want to make sure those who don’t get some support, which is why I decided to start contributing to Patreon. I don’t think they are in any way entitled to money for content they put out for free. It’s a donation, which I do because I want to encourage them to do more, and make sure their channels are sustainable.

Reasonably, if you do not like YouTube ads then you should support content creators in other ways and encourage people who make use of different platforms, for sure not watch more and more YouTube.

Well, “watching” ads is fine with me, since I don’t actually watch them anyway. I just put my phone down or go do dishes or laundry or whatever. But if skipping ads doesn’t pay the channel, I don’t want to limit income to the videos I like by not just setting my phone down for a few minutes.

Basically, I thought everyone everywhere skipped ads, and I was surprised to learn that youtubers don’t get paid if a user skips them.

Nobody knows for sure how it works as YouTube doesn’t go into great detail about how revenue is calculated; my guess is that for ads where they can only be skipped after 5 seconds, there is still revenue, just a smaller amount.

No, advertisers are not charged if the ad is skipped - it actually makes it quite an attractive ad format for that reason as you can get your brand in front of people without being charged, even if it’s only 5 seconds.

Fair enough - thanks for the clarification
