Should Straightdope have FB Share Buttons?

Yes/No?

No. Thread over.

lol

What would be the point?

Thread relocated from IMHO to ATMB.

I think no, for very good reasons. But I do think it should have some sort of function for aggregating the data when someone wants to ask the forum a personal yes/no question. It would be like a poll, so let’s call it a poll function …

I don’t see the point, but I generally try not to tie my real-life identity from my anonymous identity as much as possible. That means I don’t link to my Facebook from my internet accounts and I don’t link to my internet accounts from Facebook.

But, for the record, we DO HAVE THEM. Click on the “Facebook” button under “Bookmarks”, which is at the bottom of the page just above the Quick Reply box and it will share the current thread to Facebook.

No.

I want to share this. How can i do it from here?

How about one of those whole panels of buttons down the left side of the page that stays on top and makes it impossible to read the left edge of text on the page, and you can’t get rid of if. A lot of sites think that is a great idea.

Ummm, it does, at the bottom, go to the last reply, just below the “Post Reply button”. It’s hard to see, but there a handful of small icons down there, one of them is for sharing the thread to facebook.

Honestly, and speaking for myself and not management…I’d be all for making them more prominent. It’s a means of spreading the word. That I believe in wholeheartedly.

Huh. I’ll admit I didn’t know that existed.

It was added quite a while ago and IMO, it’s not the size that causes it to get lost, it’s that the FB icon gets buried under the obsolete ones like delicious and digg. Does any one even still go to stumbleupon anymore? I’m not sure what would happen with the google icon. If it shares it with Google+, well, that’s another obsolete one. But, like I said, at least for me, I see delicious and digg and I move past it. I don’t share threads from any site to any place to begin with, I’d cut and paste if I wanted to, but still, it just looks like a forgotten about add on.

Also, I have no idea if this version of VB has it built in (but I’d bet whatever the current version is does), but AddThis seems to be the way to share things now. That’s what you usually see on websites/blogs/stores. When it’s non-obtrusive, it’s just those little blocks at the bottom of the page, when it’s annoying it’ll sit on the right side and slide up and down with the page. The nice thing about AddThis is that it also offers analytics and tracking.

That is totally new information!

What, no MySpace button?
