shoulders: separated v. dislocated

What’s the difference between separated shoulders and dislocated shoulders?

A shoulder separation is where the acromioclavicular joint gets pulled apart.

A shoulder dislocation is where the ball joint end of the humerus is wrenched from the ‘socket’ formed by the scapula.

A shoulder separation is very painful. I had to have the end of my clavicle cut off in order to fit back into the socket.

While my arm is still functional, I cannot do certain things with that arm. And the pain is constant and causes chest pain as well. And it pops and cracks constantly. Sometimes the bones get twisted under each other. That is quite painful.
