Shows/films that everyone should have discovered

Inspired by Ellef’s thread I’ve only just discovered The Princess Bride, here’s my (alphabetical) ist of things that everyone should have discovered (films, TV shows, etc.):
[ul]
[li]Arrested Development[/li][li]Ealing comedies – any and all of them![/li][li]Fawlty Towers[/li][li]The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy - the original radio series and TV series, as well as the 5-book “trilogy”, but not the recent movie, I’m afraid[/li][li]Monty Python[/li][li]The Princess Bride[/li][li]Ripping Yarns[/li][li]Strictly Ballroom[/li][/ul]

Clearly such a list is personal and biassed, in spite of the alleged universality. So what would others have on a list like this?

My answer to this is always HBO’s The Wire.
Also, Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett.

I know neither of those is obscure here, but I tend to get zealout-y when I discover that someone has not partaken of either.

I must confess to not even having heard about either: I’m going to have to remedy that personal deficiency.

Get thee to a media distribution outlet! Aieeeee!

Great list.

I’d add: The Collected Works of Joss Whedon.

Suicide Kings - Very decent black comedy/drama about some college guys who kidnap a retired mobster (Christopher Walken) so that his people will rescue their friend who has likewise been kidnapped. Went straight under the radar, but it’s a very good movie. Also has Dennis Leary, and he’s pretty good considering that he ad-libbed nearly every line he had.

Also unfamiliar with The Wire and Good Omens. Going to have to find them.

Movies: Breaker Morant, The Hidden, Dark City

Books: Tuf Voyaging by George R.R. Martin, Aztec by Gary Jennings, Founding Brothers by Joseph Ellis, Lincoln at Gettysburg by Garry Wills

All masterpieces, I tells ya.

Movies: The Conversation, Round Midnight, Hopscotch

Books: I’ll second Good Omens and add the works of Simon Shaw and Chuck Klosterman

I never get tired of reading Lonesome Dove or watching Singing in the Rain.

In the nonfiction aisle, Guns, Germs and Steel.

Freaks and Geeks. I still think that show got shafted big time.
