As a reader of the books, I liked the show. There were a few changes made that I didn’t like, although in some cases I recognized the reasons behind them, but in general I thought it was a good adaptation of the books to TV. Paul Blackthorne was very good as Harry Dresden, and I liked the way Bob was portrayed (one of the changes from the book that I approved of). The one thing I wished beside the non-cancellation of the series was that they had shown, or at least made available on the DVD set, the original two-hour pilot that was later cut down to the single episode Storm Front.
Other shows (most previously mentioned):
Joan of Arcadia
Seven Days
Now and Again
Threshold
Firefly (which I didn’t see until after it was cancelled)
Pretender
American Gothic
Magnificent Seven
Journeyman (which I didn’t care much for at first, but by the last few episodes I was getting interested in all the unanswered questions)
I understand that NBC has announced it will not be renewing Las Vegas, which is annoying because of the cliffhanger ending of the last show.
I just read Storm Front, and yeah, there was an awful lot in there that didn’t translate well to a single episode. Pity. I guess that might have been why there was some grumbling. I hadn’t either read the books or seen the show when I ran across disgruntled fans. Paul Blackthorne was excellent, I thought. And I think doing Bob as a visible ghost was a good call. I really would like more! I made someone at the office very sad when I told her it was cancelled.
Oh, god, I thought I was the only one who saw the potential for this show. It was so bizarre and edgy, it should have been given more of a chance to catch on and let people catch on to its unorthodox format and story rhythms.
Agreed, both Cupid and Carnivale. The sad thing about the latter is that it was made to be one series, and HBO demanded the story get stretched for five… Then pulled the plug after two.
I too loved Cop Rock. I have foresworn conquering the Earth, but if I hadn’t, bringing that shoe back would have been high on the agenda, along with executing Justin Timberlake.
I agree with many already mentioned here, including Gargolyes , Firefly, and Enterprise. But the one I haven’t seen mentioned yet is Crusade, the spin-off of Babylon 5. It was canceled before it even aired, but its 13 episodes showed a lot of promise.
I agree. I thought the actor was fine in the roll. Several of the things they changed in the series were for the best. I like the books but some stuff wouldn’t translate well to a TV series. For one Dresden is way too powerful. It is not very believable that the existence of magic is supposed to be a secret with the amount of power he is always throwing around. A wizard that carries a drumstick and a hockey stick instead of a wand and staff seems very believable. Some fanboys protest but I have no problem with it. Jim Butcher didn’t either. And since the guy playing Dresden is 6-5 it was asking a bit much to give him a VW Bug.
I can understand that. I thought it was going a tad down hill when they started breaking up the crew. Officers going to different positions. I missed the Faith/Bosco banter.
The one I came in to mention, since no one else had, and you did. I’m still peeved at how the idiot suits messed with it, messed it up, and then canceled it. They never understood what they had.
And JThunder, I thought I was the only person in the world who’d liked Dweebs.
I thought “Nowhere Man” made it through two seasons? Many of the episodes were filler as forgettable as the protagonist, but I will admit that toward the end when they started finally giving up the secrets it got pretty clever.
Since there’s no series ending, I’ll go ahead and spoil it:
The conspiracy never had the power to completely erase him from society; he never existed to begin with. His identity was implanted in his mind; the people he remembers knowing he never met. It turns out he was probably an agent getting close to blowing their cover, so they captured him and reprogrammed him as part of some new plot- but something went wrong, what we’ll never know.
Wow - do you know if Voyagers! was shown in reruns at all? I totally remember watching this show as a kid but according to Wikipedia it was on when I was 3 and 4. Was it perhaps on again shortly after that or do I have a wicked-good memory?
Some of these go waaay back, and some of them have already been mentioned, but here goes:
Sports Night (I would like to have had it around longer, but I’m not sure where they’d go with the stories. In a way, I’m glad it ended rather than go bad.)
Homefront
Frank’s Place (Just a little gem)
Branded (I can’t believe I was that young. I had quite the crush on Chuck Connors)
Love on a Rooftop (It likely would have flopped badly and descended into really bad farce if it had continued, but I thought it was fun at the time.)
That’s Life (Another one that might have reached its natural life span. It was an interesting premise, and a bit different, though.)
And I’ll go all the way out onto the “just laugh at me” limb and mention Alias Smith and Jones. I mean, cute, funny, and have you seen that dimple?
