Shows That Need a Reboot

The idea of “rebooting” a sketch comedy show doesn’t make any sense to me. Same with variety or anthology series. Rebooting something like Star Trek makes sense, because the audience is invested in the characters as much (if not more) than the actors, and there’s an appeal in seeing Captain Kirk do more stuff, even if it’s not William Shatner playing him. But that doesn’t apply to something like MPFC, or The Twilight Zone. Monty Python was the output of five specific, highly talented comedians. You could get a different five highly talented comedians to put on a surrealistic sketch comedy series, but even if it’s really, really good, that’s never going to be Monty Python in any sense other than a cynical corporate branding sense. And if the members are that good, they’re going to want to do their own thing anyway, and not work under the shadow of the original group.

It’d be like rebooting the Beatles. How would an entirely unrelated group of people, creating entirely new music, be “The Beatles” in any way other than in trademark law?

Airwolf? One of the great theme songs.

Yeah, the subtle humor was nice, but later he was too much of a con-man.

Isn’t Monty Python generally considered to be six people? Terry Gilliam didn’t appear on screen as often as the rest, but was still a full member of the troupe.

Yeah, my bad. I miscounted in my head.

Liquid Television should come back, it was really just a collection of pilots and animator graduation projects so there’d be little production cost. There was something so raw about it.

I get that YouTube has DUST and Omeleto, but they’re just not the same.

Also, a good science show aimed at children, Mr. Wizard, Beakman’s World, Bill Nye, I don’t care, just something I can watch with my kids that gets them excited about science and the world around them. Ditto, Where In The World is Carmen Sandiago?

I’d like to see a Firefly spinoff called Badger featuring Mark Sheppard as the lovable rogue Badger and his adventures dealing with everything from Alliance goons to bad spaceship captains. If we could have some old Firefly characters show up in cameos. great.

Even better, set it fifteen years into the future from the Serenity movie, and add Adam Baldwin to the cast: The Serenity crew has broken up, and Jayne now works as muscle for Badger. A Jayne/Badger team could be a hoot.

Like Lost In Space has gotten? Hell yeah, I would watch that! Netflix, are you listening?

id like to see a reboot of millennium but with the daughter who had the same abilities shed be a fugitive on her own against a resurgent millennium group …

I’d like to see a new something like James Burke’s Connections or The Day the Universe Changed. True, they had Connections[sup]2[/sup] and Connections[sup]3[/sup] on The Learning Channel, but those were back in the 1990s! Certainly someone else could come up with new things if Burke wasn’t interested (and Burke himself has written several Connections-like books since then, including Circles and American Connections and Twin Tracks).

Would this be set just before the year 3000?

Richard Hammond has a series called ‘Engineering Connections’ that is very similar. It’s available on streaming.

Yeah, you’re right. Rebooting a sketch comedy show is a dumb idea because it would be an entirely different product, sharing nothing from the original, apart from the format and name.
