Shrimp Poop

I was born and raised (most of my life) in New Orleans. We know to remove that black “vein” when peeling raw shrimp. Of course, when they are boiled and THEN peeled, it’s more difficult to do.

My comment and question have to do with something else i’ve encountered. Along the back, next to the “vein” i’ve often found clumps of white stuff. What the hell is that? Is it edible?
