How much do high quality blue point Siamese cats cost? Are males or females more expensive?
Make certain, absolutely certain that you are prepared for the responsibility of being owned by a Siamese. Do you truly understand the personality traits, and needs of this breed? They are very intelligent, and very energetic. They will require a lot of play time, and if it’s not given, they will act out and demand it.
You will also have to accomodate them with things such as no longer putting heavy objects, or breakable ones up on shelves. Also, no poisonous houseplants. (This is true for any cat or dog or young child though.) Here are some informative links, to help you be certain that this is what you want. (Yes, I’d even ask my best friend these questions if she came to me wanting a Siamese.)
First, decide if you want a modern Siamese
or a classic Siamese. They are otherwise known as traditional Siamese. (I prefer the traditional Siamese, they don’t seem to get as ill, and look less like an alien.)
Here are some of the mental traits common to Oriental breeds. (I should know, I have a mixed breed kitten that I may have to take to the vet to get medicated lest she swallow enough fabric to cause an obstruction which requires surgery. She’s part Oriental breed. She’s white with golden eyes, and a traditional Siamese body, voice, and habits.)
Here is a book that seems to explain things well, you might look into reading it now, to help you make your decision.
I’m just asking that you make sure this is what you want, ahead of time. Good Luck. There are breeders listed on some of those links btw. Hope I’ve helped.
That would depend on your definition of quality. If you want a show cat, expect to pay dearly, but I personally wouldn’t have anything to do with show Siamese. My two apple heads were rescued from an animal shelter for a minimal amount of money and they are the best cats I have every had. Siamese truly are a breed apart from the rest. You obviously aren’t involved in showing now, so I’m curious if you really want a show cat or a pet cat. If you want a pet cat, go to your local shelter. You may have to make several trips as Siamese tend to get adopted the minute they become available.
Congratulations on your choice of breed. They are beautiful and elegant cats and make wonderful companions.
PS. Don’t expect Siamese to automatically accept you as the alpha cat. They have very definite ideas about who is in charge.
Just to be clear I am not looking to buy a Siamese cat or any other cat, I was just interested in how much they cost for high quality ones. I guess I would consider it to be high quality if it had champion heritage and would be considered to be a good candidate to be top show cat. Are we talking about something over $5,000? Do people sell show level cats for pets or do have to agree to show them when you buy them?
You could probably find a pet kitten whose parents are champions in the $500 to $800 range. The same kitten sold with breeding rights and not spayed or neutered will generally double the cost. If the parents are grand champions, double everything again. You would have a very hard time finding a breeder of champions willing to sell you an adult proven champion breeder still in breeding condition. They wouldn’t sell a cat they have spent years and many thousands of dollars to develop. Champion breeder cats no longer in their prime are sometimes sold but will invariably be spayed or neutered before sale. Even in this case, you would almost certainly have to establish a relationship with the breeder before they would consider giving up one of their champions. Don’t forget that people in the show/breeding circuit are generally as committed to their animals as it is possible to be and consider every one of them a member of the family. As for gender, Queens are more valuable than Kings.
The best kittens from the best champions rarely, if ever, come onto the market as creating those kittens is the very reason that people become breeders in the first place.
