What im looking for is like my civ 3 complete where its 1890 but progress wise my game world is just on the cusp of starting the steam/industrial revolution era of stuff
in civ 2 its the reverse i can have the un in 1790 … with out cheating even
Now i hadn’t played civ since 3 first came out but can it be like that in other games ?
Note i don’t care for a few of the gameplay “improvements” that 3 has …
Whats yours?
In Civ3, I usually have railroads somewhere in the range of 1200-1400. Well, when I survive that long, at least. I generally go for tech first, productivity second, and military only once I don’t have anything better to do.
do you get railroads automatically in civ 3 ? Or is it a science to be learned ?
Railroads come from the Steam Power technology, and additionally require iron, coal, and the workers to build them. Coal can be problematic, since you can’t even see it on the map until you have Steam Power. Leading up to that point, I try to grab as much territory as I can in the terrains that can have coal (mostly jungle, which aren’t worth much before that point), but even so, there’s still usually a scramble to connect a road to it (how you claim a resource in Civ3), and if I’m unlucky, I don’t even have any in my territory.
I mark the milestone of “have railroads” once I’ve successfully built a line that connects at least two of my cities, which is inevitably somewhat after the discovery of the tech. Having railroads is a big deal, because it lets you move units any distance at no cost along them, meaning a huge force multiplier, because anywhere any conflict breaks out, you can bring your entire military to bear against it. It’s also a production modifier, because any tile with a railroad on it doubles the effect of any irrigation or mine (nearly every worked land tile will eventually have one or the other of those on it).
I think within the last year or so there was a new record set in civ 4 for the space race victory. Something like 800 BC. Abusing Wonder refund mechanics to get super rich and max research.
ok how they did the espionage in 3 sucks and i can’t figure it out …i have lucre i wanna make spies so i can bribe cities to join me and i cant figure out how to do it cause apparently you cant make spies …
Spies are not a unit. There are two kinds of espionage, embassies and spies. Once you have writing, you can click on the icon next to your capital and pay money to establish an embassy with anyone you know and are not at war with, which immediately lets you look in to their capital city. Or you can wait for them to establish an embassy with you, which gives them a look, but is otherwise the same. Thereafter, as long as you’re not at war, you can pay money at any time to look in any of that nation’s cities. This has no downside beside money cost, and no chance of failure. An embassy is also required to conduct some forms of diplomacy, like military alliances and right of passage.
Once you get the Espionage technology (early industrial), you can build the Intelligence Agency small wonder. And once you’ve built that, you can attempt to place spies in other nations, by clicking on the icon next to the city containing the intelligence agency. This costs money and has a chance of failure: If you fail, then it temporarily hurts your diplomatic relations with that country, and makes it impossible to plant a spy there for a random number of turns (you can try, but it’ll fail again).
Once you have a spy, you gain a few benefits: You automatically know how many of each kind of unit they have, and you can continue to investigate cities (like with an embassy) even in wartime. You can also spend money for risky missions (spending more decreases but does not eliminate the risk): These include stealing their world map, stealing a technology, seeing where all of their units are, spreading propaganda to try to get a city to flip, or setting the production progress to zero in a city (like to beat them to a wonder). All of these missions you can attempt cheaply, for a low chance of success, moderately, or expensively, for a high chance of success. Any failure at any of these will hurt you diplomatically, and might also cause you to lose your spy.
In Civ 6 on Warlord difficulty Greece and I hit the Future era sometime between what would have been Rennaissance and Industrial historically.
I did it by playing the Arabs and concentrating on science in general. Pericles did it by spying on everyone to steal their research and concentrating on the fastest way to advance his tech and civic timelines.
But my civ is much better balanced then his (going for Science victory). Also, he managed to piss off every other computer civ out there. And he’s spent a good amount of resources fighting wars as a result.
In summary, Pericles is a jerk.
are there good mods out there still?
Not on this message board, no.
I’m going to choose to take that as a joke. It is not a joke that I would recommend making again.
