There have been no official sequels (i.e. no “Colonization 2” by Sid Meier) but there are several other similar-themed games. Unfortunately I can’t think of any that had the same tile-based movement / citybuilding mechanics that Colonization/Civ had…
Conquest of the New World, circa 1994 or so. Two things about this stood out for me - you could choose to play as a Native American federation of tribes, and the combat was almost chess-like, in which units did extra damage if they were positioned next to or behind an emeny.
1503, which came out in the past year. I haven’t tried it yet, despite having borrowed a friend’s CDs several months back. Maybe I should return those to him . . .
Or you could just keep playing Colonization, which I do on occasion.
