::sigh:: Stray animals break my heart

My neighborhood has a stray cat that I’m probably going to have to trap and take to the humane society. I’m pretty sure the poor thing will be destroyed, because I seriously doubt he’s adoptable. When I first started seeing him, he was well-fed, and I assumed his bastard owners had just let him roam the neighborhood. But now he’s about half his original weight, looks as if he’s been in several fights, and he runs off if I so much as unlock the door. He terrifies my cats, so much one of them pees on herself, and then the two of them fight so badly I have to separate them.

I just don’t know why people would treat their animals like this.

Makes me sad too DeadlyAccurate, to see that sort of suffering by any living thing :frowning:

Very responsible and unselfish of you to notice and do something about it, instead of ignoring it and going on your way.

This kind of thing always causes me pain. d_redguy and I found a stray in just that condition last year. For a while, she looked okay- but she just kept getting skinnier. We didn’t believe that she was a stray at first. I mean, this is a beautiful, long-haired Himalayan! We just assumed that she was an indoor/outdoor cat. We kept seeing her, though. She was always hanging around the parking lot. Finally, she got so skinny and matted that we took her in.

We didn’t know if she would be a keeper. She really was a mess. Fortunately, she was sweet-tempered. We ended up naming her Stella and she’s one of our babies now. It took her some time to adjust to being inside, and a lot more time to get used to our other two cats. They’ve worked out a pecking order, though.

We finally determined that someone abandoned her when they moved or got tired of her. She was obviously used to people. It’s a sin the way some people abuse their animals. :frowning:

Well, animal control said they’d call as soon as they had a trap in, and they’ll come and pick the cat up when we catch him. If he’s as hungry as I suspect, it shouldn’t take long to catch him. At least he’ll get some fresh food and water for a while.

Man, I know how you feel

the otehr day when visting my mother I heard this kitten caught in the rain and apparently lost from it mother. It jsut kept meowing in the saddest way possible. Ijsut wanted to pickit up and take it home, but saddly no pets allowed. And my mother won’t take her becasue 1) one of my cats died and she’s still in denial about how much she cared about the cat. and 20 my other kitty is a jealous bitch and would beat the kitten senseless. The only reason she didn’t beat up my other cat is she was twice her size. But Deadly, hopefully this cat will find a good home, god willing

Oh man, I hate seeing stray animals. I spent most of my childhood volunteering for the Humane Society and the Animal Rescue Mission and I’ve seen some pretty bad cases that really opened up my eyes to how cruel people can be.

I don’t understand why people, if they don’t want an animal, buy them or just take them to the shelter instead of dumping them onto the streets.

I totally agree. I’ll never understand why people are so thoughtless, cruel and selfish.
DeadlyAccurate, it makes me sad to read how people can abandon their pet or treat animals so poorly. My big passion is animals (oh, and gardening). It’s almost like it’s my mission in life to help them any way I can. I’ve lost count of the number of animals I’ve saved, desexed and rehomed. But it’s all good. They deserve a chance. It’s sad that this poor kitty that’s hanging around may be euthanized, but at least it won’t have to worry about slowly starving to death or something horrible like that. By the sounds of it, it’s probably suffered enough.

To be truthfull, I like animals more then people. My cat has never been unfaithfull to me, girlfriends have. My dog in died trying to protect me, very VERY few people would even think of doing that. God bless the pets, they rule. Cept when my cat sleeps on the cable box and changes the channel, or walks across the keyboard. But you take the good with the bad

That’s kind of how I feel. I like animals way more than people. I rather be out riding my horse or being with my dog than being with a group of people. People let me down all the time. I’ve been hurt by alot of people all my life so I no longer have faith in people as I do with animals.

Deadly, have you tried feeding this cat?

My mom used to work with the mentally retarded, and the complex where her clients lived had this guy who decided he didn’t want his kitten anymore, and just sort of threw it out to fend for itself. The kitty got hungry, got skinny, got skittish… For a while, Mom would give it a piece of lunchmeat when she saw it, just to make sure it wouldn’t starve to death. The cat would run away from her, then when she was out of sight, it would come back and eat the lunchmeat.

One day, Mom got the bright idea of giving the kitty a really good feed. With an actual full tummy, the kitty became quite friendly, and she brought him home to live with us. After some initial hissing and growling, Conan and Schrodinger got friendly with the cat, which Mom named Thunder. About a month later, my neighbor’s kitty, who they threw out because they didn’t want to pay pet rent, which was about to be instituted in the complex, climbed up onto the balcony, came in the pet door, and then we had four kitties for a while.

Mom decided four kitties was a bit too much, so after having Thunder and Gamma neutered, she gave him to two of her clients, who were roomates, and everybody lived fuzzily ever after.

I haven’t fed the cat for exactly that reason. It upsets my own cats so much to see this tom, so I’ve been avoiding it to keep him from coming around. Since at first he looked well fed, I wasn’t worried because I thought he was someone else’s. Now that he’s so scrawny (he’d disappeared for a while), I’ll only provide food once I have the animal shelter trap, but you just don’t know how terrified my cats get when they see him through the window. It’s hours before they’re calm enough to even interact with each other. The only reason he left yesterday was because the mockingbird out front chased him off.

It hurts me do go this route, but I have to think of my own cats first.

I just don’t understand people sometimes. Just last week, I went to a wedding reception that was held at the bride’s parent’s farm. There were about 6 barn kittens running around, and one was extremely sick - it was skinny, lethargic, and it’s eyes were matted shut. All I could do was give it some food and water. The poor thing - and all the other kittens - drank water out of a cup like they hadn’t had a drop of water in a week. The owners of the farm didn’t put out food or water for them. Now I know that most people don’t feed barn cats, but they were living in a little carport thing about 30 yards from the house. You woiuld think they would have noticed. There was also no sign of a mother cat.

Just yesterday we caught the stray cat that has been coming into our basement to eat our cat’s food. It got taken to the pound, and I know that no one will claim him. I really didn’t want it taken to the pound, but what else is there to do?
