I’ve never seen the Tribune. And I don’t think the New York Times is the pinnacle of perfection, as too many people make it out to be. One would think that the Blair scandal made people recognize that the Times is a newspaper like any other.
(Hopefully, everyone realizes that picking any one news source is unlikely to give you an objective view of the world.)
And the Strib has Lileks. You can’t get any cooler than that.
Actually, that’s not quite accurate. The papers are separately owned and have completely separate editorial and news staff, but they have a Joint Operating Agreement under which they’re physically published by the same company. Advertising rates and policies are governed by that agreement as well.
The Tribune is owned by Scripps-Howard. The Journal is owned by the Lang family of Albuquerque. This Denver Post article has the details about the arrangement.
I’m friends with some Times employees. They don’t seriously expect the paper to continue after the Rev. Moon’s imminent demise. The Washington Times just isn’t a serious player in this town, which is too bad because the Post doesn’t deserve the lock on this town that they have. They need some competition.
