So does anyone have any suggestions? links? cheats? I’m reading the manual and I might even figure out how to put a house up soon.

I like to edit my map so that the terrain is all flat. It makes the game a little easier as far as building roads and such. You just pick the edit map option and go to town.
Plus, remember that no one will build anything more then three blocks away from a road. They don’t want you to have to many roads either, so you can just build a long six blocks X n blocks area.
n=whatever number you want.
I got the SC 200o in the SDMB White Elephant exchange. Without the manual. So I found a used copy online. All I can say is go thorugh it line by line. slowly and carefully and do all the tutorials it has. Then start with a flat terrain. You can move on to whatever else they give you later.
I used to really enjoy using one of the pre-built cities on the disc. It’s great because they have plenty free space for you to build in, and you can mess them up too - all the fun of the fair without the boredom of pioneer days.
There’s a “cheat” of sorts, which involves building little islands of four squares surrounded by water with a certain combination of land use. You either do or do not buiild a bridge to them. Probably not. Anyway they are unaffected by most of what happens to the city, and just sit there pumping out money. I think the cheat used to be called “The Money Pit”. Maybe run a search?
It is a great game. Mind you at the time it was cutting edge so we all had the time to spend poring over it. But it’s still brilliant and, as I understand it, wasn’t much improved on by Sim City 3000.
Another trick is to get a decent sized small town, and leave the game running for a few hours, and when you come back, you’ll have a thriving little town and a ton of money to build it up to a city.
The only thing you have to remember is DON’T BUY SIM CITY 3000!! It sucks.
As I understand the game, you start it, choose “Feet” or “Pods”, and stare at the screen until you get a better game.
It might have some value as a screen saver.
Yeah, get 3000 Unlimited instead.
I have classic, 2000, and 3000. I like being able to import pics to use as landscapes in 3000; of course I have to use the cheat that makes nearly everything free because of all the extreme elevation changes.
Mermaid, see if you can find Streets of Sim City somewhere. This game will let you drive around in the cities you create with SC2000.
