I never was able to reload Riverside last night, but there was a thread in the forums from the developers about the problem I was having asking for details so it would seem like they are working on it. I’ll try again tonight. I can’t make TVs yet, but I’m working on getting the upgrade I need for it.
Skammer, when I was duing my New Ceciltopia survey last night, I saw that your city had a “processing” message on it. When I looked at it again after a couple hours, I was able to load it. Are you getting the Roll Back/Abandon message?
Hey, Johnny Bravo, how’s your city doing? I can send some crude oil your way if you think it will help. Maybe you can retool to all-residential to get some tax simoleons.
I did get the roll back/abandon message, and selected Roll Back, and then whenever I tried to load it I got a message saying the city couldn’t be loaded at this time. I gave up after a while, it’s possible that they’ve gotten it fixed now. I’ll post tonight whether it’s fixed.
I’m now back online and have done the training module. The NA East 2 server is still full, but please feel free to add me as a friend, you’ll find me under either Mooma or sandra_nz.
The city of TownPlace is proud to announce that we are now home to over 116,000 Sims!
As TownPlace has grown and our needs have changed, we have built a Nuclear Power Station for electricity and have moved our water pumping station. We have also opened a Dept. of Education and a University!
…
I’m still waiting for the East 2 Server to open up, in the meantime I’m building TownPlace into a bustling metropolis! There’s still spots open in SimTopia if anybody is interested!

I discovered that the simulation continues to run in background when the game is in windowed mode, so I’m letting it do that to send enough metal to the arcology, while I do other things (like read the Dope). In other news, the arcology has enough alloy. Here’s a picture.
I also took some pictures of the various data layers the game has to offer. You can see that Terminus Isle is a dirty, polluted hell-hole that exists only to pump oil from the earth and convert it to fuel. The residents, crammed into teeming tenements, keep getting sick from all the ground pollution, but there are no schools so they are uneducated enough not to know any better; the Sims can shop, so they’re happy. I have no garbage facilities; all trash pickup is handled by neighboring cities. Crime is kept in check only by the presence of a massive police force.
How are you guys keeping your density up? I’m having to put parks left and right. There has to be a better way.
Parks? My sims have no need for parks. As long as they can get to work, get back home, and go shopping, low wealth sims will be happy enough to high density housing if they have the space. I’ve learned, though, that low-wealth high-density housing can cause more ground pollution than oil wells and heavy industry.
I usually get stuck at medium density. What’s your ratio to residential/commercial?
I estimate maybe 2:1 residential to commercial, maybe more. See my pictures of the data layers from a few posts back. Unless you’re catering to tourists, you want to have the commercial close to the residential. Also, the commercial needs to be of the appropriate wealth type; low wealth sims are going to spend their money in high wealth shops.
I think my R:C ratio is much higher and in fact I constantly seem to be demolishing abandoned C buildings because they don’t have enough shoppers. It could be that my wealth level is unbalanced though; I haven’t really gotten the hang of controlling that yet.
I have hordes of visitors to my city. No idea why as the place really is a shit-hole. But they seem to like shopping here so I probably have more commercial than I need.
Not well. I learned that you can’t intersect regular roads with service road, which means that until my oil runs dry I’ve kind of cut off a portion of my map. I’ll try the residential thing.
You can but the game is picky about where. I was able to continue a service road straight out from a power station across the regular road behind but couldn’t make a 90° turn and cross the regular road to the right.

I still can’t get back into Riverside. “This city is not available right now.” Sigh. I even tried to abandon it and re-claim it, but that didn’t work. I wonder if I abandoned it and someone else reclaimed it, if that would change anything? Then they could abandon it back to me.
Anyway, there were still a lot of empty parcels in New Ceciltopia so I planted the new town of Rat Portage. It’s growing slowly but steadily. In an attempt to outwit traffic, I only have three intersections in the whole town. The main highway goes right through one quadrant of the city, so on the isolated corner I’ve planted my power plant and dump (sewage is currently exported) connected to the main road by a simple dirt road. Then, on the upwind side of the city, I have one medium-grade avenue that intersects with the main road and snakes back and forth across the zone mostly zoned R with a few sections of C. On the downwind side of the zone, I have a medium-grade road that snakes back and forth with all my industry including a coal mine (and a future additional coal mine). In the middle of the zone is a short section of avenue that has all government services: the grade school, police, fire, clinic and city hall.
So far traffic is in check; but we’re still under 10,000 residents so we’ll see how this works.
I also tried to check in on Creosote in Slugworth but that wouldn’t load either - no error message; it just hangs while loading. I’ll try that one again next time I’m online.
I tried this with your abandoned city in old Ceciltopia. I claimed it then tried to play it, but it said it couldn’t load the city. I tried again and the game hung on the loading screen. After restarting, I abandoned the city. Maybe you want to give it a shot.
Over in New Ceciltopia, Johnny Bravo and I got to spend some quality time together. To get his city back on his feet, I gave him a bailout of $100,000. Watching in region view, I could see his truck come out of his city, make its way up the highway, get stuck in traffic, and inch its way up to my town hall. Once it got there, I got a news item that the gift had been delivered. I confirmed that Mayor Bravo had gotten the money by Origin chat. So your region gifts will get delivered, but the trucks that deliver the gifts are Agents themselves and have to navigate through the landscape.
I advised Mayor Bravo to set up a recycling center, as that would let him contribute to the arcology as well as making him a lot of money. I eventually saw his truck coming into my town to pick up recycling. I was under the impression that only educated sims would recycle; since I still haven’t built a school I thought a recycling center wouldn’t do me much good. Seeing Bravo’s truck pick up the stuff in my town, I knew I had to get in on the action.
I bulldozed my industrial center and relocated the factories out on the island. Built the recycling center as well as a garbage dump. I also dezoned and bulldozed some abandoned buildings and planted trees in the empty lots; that should eventually clean up the ground pollution. I’ll have to do this rolling cleanup with most lots in the city, as my sims have been living in their own filth for quite some time. My next session, I’ll plop some schools and a college, so I can start up the electronics ladder to manufacture TVs. I should be in a good position when the oil runs out.
I didn’t realize I had abandoned that one. I’ll see if I can re-claim it, but it sounds like changing mayors didn’t solve whatever the problem was.
Anyone have any feedback on these? Specifically Dead Space, MOHW, NFS, and Battlefield, since I either already have or are very much not interested in the others.
I was actually hoping they’d give away another copy of SimCity 5… the hubby wants to play but not enough to shell out the big bucks.
I upgraded my oil pumps to plastic factories, and that’s pulling in quite a bit more money than before. It earned me enough cash to build an entire fleet of recycling trucks, and those have descended like locusts over our quadrant of New Ceciltopia, harvesting plastic and cans wherever they might be found.
I don’t know if any of the metal I’m producing is actually making it to the arcology. I have the trade depots set to export and the toggle set to “on” at the regional menu. Here’s hopin’! Somebody’s gonna have to start producing TVs eventually, in any case.
