Quite frankly, I think the bit was hilarious and I don’t think Simon took it personally. I mean the guy is a royal wanker so he has to have a pretty thick outer shell if he is gonna dish out on others like that.
If he does take it personally, you won’t see me crying in my pillow that they offended the jerk.
If calling him a homo as an insult wasn’t bad (in a tasteful sense of humor for popular consumption), the entendre that followed it didn’t help. I don’t see that Simon seemed to care all that much, though.
Yea, that was way over the top. They should replace Triumph with Primetime the Compassionate Non Offensive Politically Correct Ultra-Sensitive Tolerant Canine .
First of all, as far as I know, that venom-spewing harpie hasn’t come out yet. Therefore, calling him a homo is either A.) outting him against his will or B.) insulting the gay population.
However, I think he’s moving toward coming out. On the opening episode, while critiquing a male contestant, he said the contestant was uninteresting. Paula said something about “You wouldn’t be interested if I danced around this room.” Simon said “You’re right. I’d rather see anyone else in this room dance around then you.”
Now, this could be read as your simple Paula-Simon spat, or Simon insinuting that he’d rather see ANY man dance then the one chick in the room.
If Simon Cowell is gay somebody might want to tell his girlfriend who was on an episode of MTV Cribs with him last year. Also, I remember him dating a female porn star last year who may or may not be the same woman from the MTV show. The porn star girlfriend is mentioned here as appearing with him in Las Vegas.
I don’t think the question is whether people on this thread find IDC’s words “Offensive”. I just think that there are many different ideas and opinions of what’s inappropriate and insulting. Some people may think this crossed the line.
I personally couldn’t care less, and would advise others to not give a sh*t. I do, however, think Triumph tICD had probably insulted more people than average (on the show) with that particular insult. I don’t know if it’s a matter of what SHOULD people be offended with, than what they actually ARE offended with, since the show doesn’t want to alienate viewers.
Paula said she could dance around the room naked, and everybody in the room could be naked, and he would still be bored. And he replied by saying that yes, if she were dancing around the room naked it wouldn’t excite him. He never said anything about preferring to see anyone else in the room dance. However, what he did say could be easier interpreted as a homosexual comment than the way you remembered it. I’m pretty sure that most hetero men would be excited if Paula Abdul danced naked in front of them.
That being said, I personally don’t think he’s gay. Oh well.
I see a difference in usages with “gay” and “homo” and similar words. If said sincerely, without tongue planted firmly in cheek, it can be very offensive. Said other ways though, it is more of a farce. I look at it as making fun of people who make fun of people using “homo”. Does that make sense? Probably not. Using it to set the character of a closed-minded ignorant person. For example, when my friend Cora (who is a lesbian) talks about an incredibly stupid or intolerant thing someone did, sometimes we say “that is sooo gay!”, meant in a way that it mocks the person not because we are calling them gay, but because it is something that they would say.
Don’t pit me on this one, it’s late at night and I’m rambling.
The show routinely makes jokes about the members of boy bands being gay, the idea being that calling someone gay is a big, funny insult. Which puts Conan and his writers on the level of 11 year olds.
