Simple File Sharing assymetry in XP - help!

(Note: I am talking here about “Simple File Sharing” over my own home network, not illegal file sharing software)

I’ve got a D-link WLAN router connecting 3 PCs running XP (Dracolich, Drake, and Ziggy) and a Buffalo Linkstation NAS file server (Hoard).

Ziggy is selfish, and won’t let the others see his shared directories, although he can see all of theirs.

I can get to \ziggy, \dracolich, \drake, and \hoard from Ziggy
But I can only get to \dracolich, \drake, and \hoard from Drake and Dracolich.

\ziggy gets a “not accessible, You might not have permission to use this network resource… Logon Failure: The user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer” error.

I thought it might be ziggy’s firewall, but I turned it off temporarily and got the same problem. All the settings seem to be the same on all 3 computers. I’m stumped.

Anyone have a suggestion?

Is the Server service running OK on Ziggy?

Yup, it’s set to Automatic, and it shows up as started when I run services.msc

Gonzoron are you running XP Pro or Home edition?
Are the four machines in a Domain or running in a Workgroup?

I’ve had the same symptoms at work and they are stem from the Sharing and Security Permission settings for network users.
The fix usually is to set the Full Control option for Everyone.
I note though that my copy of Home edition does not have this configuration page available. So you may have a different problem if they are all running Home.

They are all XP Pro SP2, and I’m running in a workgroup.

Under Sharing and Security, I have the “Share this folder on the network” and “Allow network users to change my files” boxes checked. I don’t see a “Full Control” option there. Where is it?

(thanks all for the suggestions, by the way…)

In which case I assume that page is only activated if the machine is a Domain member. So presumably this is a different symptom.
On my set up on the same page the Windows Firewall entry specifies that “Windows Firewall is configured to allow this folder to be viewed on this network”
As I use Norton IS I have the Windows Firewall switched off. Maybe Ziggy needs to include the rest of the Workgroup as exceptions?

In addition, Zone Alarm has caused previous problems on our home network by refusing requests from remote machines. Is it installed on Ziggy?

I’ve got the “Windows Firewall is configured to allow this folder to be viewed on this network” message there too. I did try putting the other computers as exceptions, and even tried turning off the firewall completely, but no luck.

No Zone Alarm. I do have Norton IS installed too, and checked to make sure that was off as well. Even with both firewalls off, it doesn’t work.

I dont suppose Ziggy’s Sharename starts with a $ sign does it?
On Domain based XP systems the $C for instance is the Administrator share, to create a global share you need to create a new share called ‘c’ for instance.

From where I’m sitting on a Home system you seem to have the same Windows options as I do, I’m wondering wether XP pro has this additional featurette while omitting the Security permissions I mentioned earlier.

Unfortunately my housemate who runs XP pro on my network moved out last week :frowning:

Nope, no wacky characters in the share name. just letters. And it’s not just one particular share. I can’t even see \ziggy at all.

Is Ziggy running any Norton security products?

Yeah, Norton IS, but even when I turned the Norton firewall off, it still can’t be seen.

Norton Internet Security is notorious for breaking Windows networking. It is not the firewall. You will have to uninstall it in Add/Remove Programs, then run the Norton Software Removal Tool to get all the bits and pieces the uninstaller leaves behind. I’ll bet dollars to donuts your problem will disappear.

Oh, and I would advise you not to reinstall Norton. It is a piece of crap.

Make sure the Guest account is turned off and make sure Ziggy has UNCHECKED the **Tools> Folder Options> View tab> Use Simply File Sharing (recommended) ** setting at the bottom of the View tab.
