Simple recipe idea- would it be any good?

I have a bag of frozen meatballs and a bag of those frozen balls of dough that grow up to be rolls. I let the rolls rise, I flatten them out, and wrap them around a couple of meatballs, and let them rise a bit, then into the oven and baked per bag. What do you think (leaving out snarky remarks about store bought meatballs, please :o)?

Sounds good to me! Make yourself some gravy to go with it.

They might be a bit dry. I would add a little tomato sauce and some mozzarella. Are the meatballs precooked? If not, I would recommend cooking them first. May also want to slice them just to make it easier to eat.

I can do that! Bisto to the rescue

Add cooked onion and/or sauerkraut and cheese. Then have a sour cream dipping sauce.

Sounds like a meatball version of Pigs In A Blanket.

Sounds like a Gwai Lo version of Char Sui Bao (if the meatballs are pork).

I would totally eat that!

I actually have a similar Frankenrecipe in the oven right now. A couple weeks ago, I got some salami-wrapped mozzarella sticks on clearance and put them in the freezer; today, I made some bread dough and wrapped it around the sticks, and am baking it right now. I’ll let everyone know how it turns out.

Are the meatballs cooked or raw?

I’d float them on top of a pan full of rough diced vegetables and stock, then bake the dish in the oven uncovered - they’ll be sort of steamed dumplings, but with a crusty top.

If they’re not cooked, I would cook them and allow to cool before wrapping them in the dough.

Thaw the meatballs first. If you don’t the centers may still be frozen when the dough is done.

Several minutes before they were ready, I rubbed a stick of butter over them, the way you would with an ear of corn, and sprinkled them with garlic powder.

They were delicious!

They’re cooked.

I second this.

For me this would likely be a recipe to agonizing heartburn. Before I discovered that there’s one brand of tomato sauce (Hunts) that makes varieties without basil, I tried simply baking frozen meatballs. Oh, no. That was awful on my tummy. I don’t know if the grease gets diluted in tomato sauce or what the difference was, but I’m never baking them again.

But I am weird, digestively speaking. Most people have no issues with rice, but I sure do.

Sounds a lot like empanadas. Try using some Mexican seasoning and/or salsa.

As it turns out, I have three varieties of frozen meatballs in my freezer right now: Swedish, Italian, and plain Angus beef. I might give this a try with the last type.

sounds like a variation of buroks (burox burocks?)
[homer] MMMMMM buroks [/homer]

…Ahem, anyway, regarding the OP, yes sounds like a good idea, try it out and report back with either deliciousness or failure, so we may either copy you or use your experiment as a cautionary tale.

I tried it and it was pretty successful. The rolls when risen were way stickier than I thought they’d be, but they spread out nicely. I chopped up the thawed meatballs, and in 2 I just put meatballs, and in 2 others I put meatballs, some shredded cheddar, and a dollop up BBQ sauce. The dough stretched up to cover nicely without tearing. They were actually pretty tasty. Next time I’m going to use hamburger with pizza sauce and cheese. But the thing is, it was really easy and fast and just about hassle free.
