Given that Connery was Scottish, Lazenby was Australian, Dalton was Welsh, and Brosnan was Irish, this quote actually does make some sense (Moore has been the only Brit to play Bond thus far).
And what was the deal with the totally unfunny and long bit where Homer is trying to make a lactose intolerant kid eat ice cream? That was downright embarassing, even if they were spoofing something, which I don’t think they were.
The deal was that Homer was being a jerk. I don’t remember laughing at that part - it was “jerkass Homer” in full force - but that’s all there was to it. This is a ridiculous thing for me to say, but I think you are putting too much thought into this Simpsons joke.
As I was watching last night, I saw the scene with Marge and the Texan, where they’re both shooting in celebration, and I was thinking, “I wonder if they’ll have a gag where something falls from the sky from having been shot.” Sure, it would have been obvious, a pretty straightforward throwaway gag–but they didn’t even bother with that. Just Marge and the rich Texan, shooting away, in a one-note joke that went on a beat or two too long. That’s the difference between current and past Simpsons episodes: the earlier shows were packed with jokes, which came at you at a much more rapid pace. You needed to “think a few moves ahead” watching an episode from several seasons ago. Today’s eps come across as slow, like the “joke density” has thinned considerably, and the quality of the jokes that are there just don’t live up. It may be a matter of perception, but it’s a matter of perception that is quite widely shared among long-time viewers.
In fact, I think last night’s show–though it had a couple of good jokes–was enough to convince me to remove The Simpsons from my DVR’s series recording schedule. I’ve seen every episode they’ve ever aired, but at this point I feel I can miss an episode, and I really won’t be missing that much at all.
Some of you guys are sounding a lot like my parents. “In my day things were better and we were thankful for walking uphill in snowstorms.” I guess that makes sense as the Simpsons tv show is about a generation old and the gap is starting to show :). I thought it was a first rate episode. The joke with the photos and the cat was as good as any I have seen.
RE: the scene where Homer forces the lactose intolerant kid to eat icecream - WTF? That wasn’t “jerkass” Homer, that was sociopathic attempted child murderer Homer. That scene wasn’t funny at all, it was creepy.
Seeing as Homer often chokes Bart while getting angry at him, I think “sociopathic attempted child murderer” is a good description of him. (Although this incident I think is more of an ignorant Homer- he believes “lactose intolerant” means “I do not tolerate lactose” rather than “lactose can kill me if I eat it.”)
So you don’t think child murderers are jerks? That say a lot about you, sicko.
Also, while I’m not lactose intolerant, I am pretty sure it is an inconvenient ailment, not a fatal one. So it’s yet another example of Homer saying a strange thing in a threatening way. I’ve seen too many similar scenes to be creeped out by that one, and his reaction to the word “intolerance” was kinda funny. Also, I liked Homer mistaking Marge’s sculpture for Magilla Gorilla.
