Simpsons 12/17/00

My god, I haven’t seen anything that phallic since Clockwork Orange.

THANK YOU!
I thought I was the only one. I said to my BF “Does that look like a giant penis to you too?” He just laughed and wouldn’t answer.

“Hey Lou, want to help me shake out these last few drops?”
“Sure Chief”

“You won’t have your Willie to slap around anymore!”

Three words: ranch dressing hose.

“Quick, Nibbler, chew through my ball sack!”

My friends and I all agreed it was, by far, THE most suggestive of all Simpsons episodes.

BTW, what was suppossed to look like a giant penis? Must have missed that scene. (Oh, wait, I think I just relaized. Was it the silos of salt and cracker-stuff?)

At least Willie didn’t rip his shirt off in this episode.

Of course the Cirque de Puree’s dancer waggling his crotch at Homer probably didn’t help matters much.

I KNOW!!!

It was funny and I laughed and all… but I was thinking through the whole thing… “Isn’t this more suited for ‘Family Guy’?” It seemed like cheaper laughs then I’m used to from the simpsons (NO REALLY!) most of the time the best jokes actually take a thought process.

“Bite through my ball sack.” Now that is a great sig.

How on earth did all of that get past the Standards and Practices folks? Groening must have convinced them by saying “Well, no one much watches this show anymore, so only a very select few will be offended.”

I still can’t believe I heard that line.

Seconding bouv’s question, which someone will likely answer while I’m typing! I watched last night, but I was chatting with friends on AIM at the same time so I may have missed something.

I did enjoy “You won’t have your Willie to slap around anymore,” though.

What a crappy, crappy episode. And it started off fairly promising. Unfortunately, once they got to school, it turned into an episode I’ve already seen twice–when Bart takes over Kamp Krusty, and when Bart and the kid are marooned on the island. Both were much funnier than this one was, too. And “Futurama” did much funnier “ball” jokes a couple weeks ago.

Afterwards, I said to Leigh-Anne, “On the one hand, it’s funny to hear Skinner say, ‘Now chew through my ball sack.’ On the other hand, why is this show stooping to jokes like, ‘Now chew through my ball sack.’?”

Oh, and thanks for yet another slap in the face to Simpsons fans who actually care about continuity with the “Mr. Plow” joke, Mike Scully.

Has anyone else noticed them going for the easy smut laughs lately? I mean, yeah, “Bite through my ball sack” and “slap your Willie around” are funny—but I loved “The Simpsons” for their jokes about Eudora Welty, Stephen Hawkings and Zelda Fitzgerald!

Sad to see them dumbing down . . .

Well, there was “Take that Johnny Tremaine – your Newbury award won’t save you now!”

Unfortunately (at the risk of sounding like a total loser), in the “Whacking Day” episode, Bart read ]Johnny Tremaine as assigned by Marge, and he loved it:
Marge: Bart, I’d like you to read this copy of Johnny Tremaine''. It's a book I read as a girl. Bart: A book!? Pfffft. Marge: I think you might like this. It's about a boy who goes to war. His hand is deformed in an accident. Bart: Deformed? Why didn't you say so! They should call this book Johnny Deformed’’!

What?! Are you kidding? This show has the best continuity of any show on TV, ever. That joke proves it! They forget nothing. They simply choose to ignore things if it’s inconvenient. Seriously, they put in one-liners about shows from years ago. That always kills me.

Fer criminy’s sake, Homer was singing his own theme song while claiming he was never Mr Plow! I am either misinterpreting your comment or you are way off base here.

I think maybe you’re misinterpreting. Or maybe it is me. The slap in the face isn’t the joke itself, per se; it’s that the producers know there are fans who are concerned with continuity, so every once in a while they throw in a line like that as a jibe. Much like when the family bought a racehorse last season, and the Comic Book Guy shows up to remind everyone that the family had already owned a horse once.

So the “Mr. Plow” joke appears (to me and some fans) to be their way of saying, “We know you think the show has gone downhill and lacks continuity, and we don’t care.”

Incidentally, I think your premise about having continuity unless it’s inconvenient is backwards–the show has no continuity unless they think it might be useful or funny. For example, there’s an episode this season in which it is determined that Homer’s stupidity arises from a crayon that is stuck in his brain. Well, no it doesn’t–it’s the “Simpson Gene,” which we’ve discovered makes the men stupid and the women smart. It was the plot of an entire episode, but they’ll pretend it doesn’t exist until they need it for a joke.

I also thought that that episode was bad. The plot was very poor. Another weird, stupid ending. The only good part was when Homer cut a big piece of Ned’s roof to use as a snow plow.

I guess we see what we want to see. I really didn’t think phalic until I read this post – and the gushing salt to boot! Oh my. “Chew through my ball sack” was just an obvious throw away line that everyone probably “got”. No mistake there. How naughty. This show has been on so long and been so good, that sometimes we think each show has to be a “masterpiece”. That kind of expectation is the highest compliment a show can have.

Surprise! I actually liked it. (Me who detested the lack of effort on the Halloween episode.)

Maybe i enjoyed it b/c of the lack of Christmas stuff in it? Usually I tend to hate the Xmas episodes. This one did kind of rock…and the thing w/ Police Chief Wiggum and the coffee…my bro and I both thought he was urinating into the snow…at first I thought it was just me and my dirty mind thinking he was pissing…guess not!

The camel thing was odd. Funny but weird. Nibbles was so cute! The ball sack- I thought he was saying Balzac…(“No need for potty talk just b/c you can’t think of someone…”)

Oh and the stagehand in The Christmas That Almost Wasn’t But Then Was. That was hilarious!

Maybe it wasn’t as good as episodes from seasons 2-8, but surely it was the best of THIS season … wasn’t it?

I have to admit, though, that this Simpsons fan (and I do mean “fan” as in “fanatic”) is only half-watching the episodes this season. In fact … I can’t believe I’m about to say this … I actually look at the listings to see what else is on.

I don’t get it. With all those Simpsons fans out there, are they unable to get people who can write the kind of scripts we love?

Mind you, I will say one thing in their defense: they can’t do it EXACTLY the same. Watching reruns for the fifth time I’m started to notices certain themes for jokes and I find it a bit annoying. Like the line, “I thought I’d never have to say THAT again” has been used in several variations throughout the season (i.e. the character suggests that somebody else – usually Homer – has done something collosally stupid before).

Anyway, if this goes on for much longer, perhaps it will be time to bow out gracefully. I hope The Simpsons doesn’t crash and burn like the last season of Roseanne.
