I thought the episode itself was kind of… “Eh.” But what I really wanted to bring up was that they’ve been teasing the whole “SOMEBODY DIES!!!” angle for months, and then it turns out to be

Krusty’s dad.Really? Who cares??? He’d been in, what, like two episodes?
My kall was that Krusty was going to kroak. I’d gotten that vibe from the fact that FXX’s Simpsons block (which usually follows a theme) focused on Krusty.
Yeah… Krusty’s dad. Anyway, not a steamingly bad episode but not the best either. There were a few things that fell flat, like Krusty bemoaning that his dad never saw him famous then a cut to commercial. There should have been something else there, like a pullback to some stupid Krusty merch or something. Krusty is a good supporting character but I don’t think he’s the best for being the focal point of the A plot. B plot was OK but better eps in the past have converged the story at the end. With Krusty’s dad, I think it would have been a better if we didn’t know it was coming, I think there would have been more resonance to it but I assume that someone at Fox wanted to tease it this way.
I thought the couch gag was interesting and I liked it but I also thought it went way too fricking long. I know they’re involving well known artists for this stuff and I got the gist of it. It could have been half as long though.
I figured it was Krusty’s dad when I heard the clue, “Someone won an Emmy for voicing the character.” Jackie Mason was one of what I like to call the six “consolation prize Emmy” winners from the show for voiceover back when ATAS created the category in 1992 (I for one consider the category’s creation as a “consolation prize” for the show, which at the time was not allowed to enter any of the Comedy Series categories). IIRC, The Simpsons led all shows in Emmy wins that season.
At first, I thought the funeral in “Four Regrettings and a Funeral” was going to be this one. When it turned out to be a character they introduced in that episode, I figured that the death referred to was Homer’s in “Days of Future Future.”
Expect more “long, boring, pointless couch gags”; having reasonably famous animators doing the couch gag is “in” at the moment. I think everybody saw Banksy’s and wondered, “How can I get in on this?”
And this isn’t the first time Lisa has been worried about Homer’s health. Remember this (albeit from 20 years ago):
“We take eighteen ounces of sizzling ground beef, and soak it in rich, creamery butter, then we top it off with bacon, ham, and a fried egg. We call it the Good Morning Burger.”
In this case, not just “reasonably famous” but an Oscar nominee (though not a winner, as the link claims). As a longtime fan of his work, I thought it was easily the best part of the show.
