There’s this fairly old Simpsons episode which is basically a show hosted by Troy McClure, in which the history of the Simpsons is explained, some trivia is given, etc.
One of the elements of this show was a view of some scenes which were ‘cut out’ of the original episodes (an alternate ending to ‘who shot mr. Burns’, an extra scene with the robotic Richard Simmons, etc.). My questions: were these ‘real’ cutscenes? Or were they created for the episode? I have my doubts about the alternate ending to ‘who shot mr. Burns’, and it seems strange to me that an animated show, which is normally timed to the second, would end up with ‘excess’ material. Anyone know?
I think the joke was that this is a cartoon show that was showing
“outtakes,” as any live-action show might do.
According to them Futurama DVD commentaries they build in about two minutes worth of extra time into an episode, mostly to allow some flexibility on what to cut. I’m guessing that the Simpsons follows the same formula (maybe they’ve mentioned as much in the Simpsons commentaries…I’ve watched Futurama more recently though).
That being said, I’m not sure if the robotic Richard Simmons, et. al. was a true outtake or not.
Actually there is a bit of overshooting in the Simpsons. While it’s not done often, from commentary on the DVD’s they do occasionally do some slight reworking after the episode comes back in color. There are other things in that clip show that were fake and the producers have come out and said so but nothing about those two clips so I’d guess they were genuine.
Oh, and they did shoot two endings for Who Shot Mr. Burns to prevent anyone from blabbing prematurely, something slightly different than what I was referring to.
I thinks it’s funny that a cartoon would have “bloopers”.
On the other hand, I think a lot of those from real shows are faked, which makes the cartoon ones that much funnier.
They’re real. Haven’t you’ve seen clips in previews that were never really present in the aired episodes? Like that scene from 22 Short Films About Springfield (only 20 were aired) which featured Ralph and Krusty on an airplane. They showed that in the previews but it wasn’t in the episode. And that scene with Maggie on the moon in that episode with Lisa as the President was never aired either.
