Simpsons Treehouse of Terror XVII (spoilers)

The 17th Treehouse of Terror is on now. When was the last time it was actually on or before Halloween?

Sometime in the 90s, before Fox got exclusive postseason baseball. Wikipedia says 1999 with Treehouse of Horror X, airing on Halloween.

Was that really Fran Drescher? And how come the space blob didn’t have any effect on Homer?

Oh fuck! Treehouse of Horror :smack: !

It sure diddly-iddly was!

What does it say about me that I heard Maurice LaMarche and immediately thought of a first-season episode of Animaniacs?

Other than giving him an insatiable appetite for everyone and everything in Springfield?

Chief Wiggum: “How bout I punch you in the nose, bud?”
Orson Wells: (meaningful pause) “Nosebud”

“What’s so great about this depression, anyway?”
“I think it’s the sepia tone. It makes me feel all nostalgic.”

So… have I missed some episodes, or was that the single most political message I have seen on the Simpsons?

(Don’t get me wrong, I loved it, but usually I see the Simpsons being fairly neutral on things like the Iraq war and terrorism.)

Great episode! Who did Orson Welles’ voice? It was spot on.

I really loved the final scene. Very dramatic, punch-you-in-the-gut, “we’re not even trying to be funny - the war sucks.”

Maurice LaMarche, who pretty much made a career out of it. Besides imitating Welles, he’s known for doing The Brain from Pinky and the Brain…which is pretty much imitating Orson Welles.

That was Maurice LaMarche. If you’ve ever watched an episode of Pinky and The Brain (or Animaniacs with a Pinky and The Brain segment) you’ve heard him do that exact voice for The Brain.

That’s what I was mentioning up-thread. In the first season of Animaniacs there was a Pinky and The Brain segment where Brain’s plan was to do an updated version of War of the Worlds but on TV. Of course, it backfired as it was a comedy smash.

Dang it, mobo beat me to it. He also did the voice of Morbo and the Big Brain on Futurama.

As well as Horrible Gelatinous Blob. Neither of which sound like each other, by the way.

Right down to the point of doing an episode of P&tB where Brain did a version of the infamous peas commercial.

I don’t remember that one. And I thought I knew Pinky and the Brain.

It was an Animaniacs short called Yes, Always. Brain is doing a voice-over session and failing, in a situation very similar to an old tape of Orson Welles doing a frozen peas commercial.

“Original casting by: Bonnies on a Plane”

Oh, that one. Yeah, now I remember it. It always struck me as a very odd, if very funny, episode.

you mean these cllips?

Mrs. Pell’s Fishsticks
they’re even better…

Rosebud Peas - “Yes, Rosebud frozen peas. Full of country goodness and green peaness.”
