Wow, it’s been 18 Halloween specials already?
Nice aim on those pumpkins, boys!
Nice to see Plopper the pig again, although this might be the end of his show biz career. Literally.
I was wonering when Devil-Flanders would show up (is this the second or third time Ned’s been Satan ). The first two weren’t Halloweenish at all and the third was so so.
What the hell was that crap? A spoof of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, for Christ’s sake? How Halloweeny. They’re just not trying anymore.
At least the first segment had scary monsters in it. The only thing Halloweenish about the second segment was the supernatural strength Homer would have needed to lift and fire a minigun.
I was surprised that one person wrote all three segments, since in the past each segment had its own writer. (The credited writer was Marc Wilmore, whose brother Larry appears on The Daily Show.)
[Didn’t watch] Perhaps all the real good spoof-worthy horror movies/shows/memes have all been done by the show by now?
I liked the Mr. and Mrs. Smith the most of the three segments. It is Halloweenish because Marge and Homer are acting in a murderous way to each other that they don’t usually do. The opening was really pretty funny. When the American Idol logo came up I almost missed it because they come up so often, but I did notice that the character was drawn in a cartoon like way. Why don’t they ever run these episodes before instead of after halloween?
Baseball.
Wow, an E.T. parody. How topical.
[Charleton Heston] God damn you! Damn you all to hell! [/CH]
And the Twilight Zone parodies were? Of course, those were funnier.
Seeing House get blown up in the microwave made me very happy indeed.
Looking at the credits on Wikipedia, they’ve been doing it that way the last five years.
Other than the use of Kang and Kodos and all the hell stuff in the last one, it wasn’t very Halloween-ish. (But other than that…) I do think the shows were better years ago, when they were a little scarier. But they’ve done werewolves, vampires, zombies, Frankenstein and other things multiple times over the years, so I can understand the lack of classic Halloween material.
For all that, I thought the Mr. and Mrs. Smith segment was by far the best. It was an unusual twist on the Simpsons world, which is what the Halloween segments used to be, and they used the characters in fun ways while doing a good spoof of action movies.
I liked how the hairline of Bart’s Frankenstein mask mimicked the top of his own hair. I’m afraid that’s all the praise I can offer.
(I saw Maurice LaMarche in the credits, but can’t recall his contribution… ?)
I was thinking he might have been one of the NASA people, but his voice didn’t stick out to me. After his very good turn as Orson Welles last year, that’s a letdown.
Exactly. I can forgive “dated” if “dated” is paired with “funny.”
When Kodos started attacking the people, why o why didn’t they melt a la the Nazis in Raiders of the Lost Ark?
I don’t know… Kang’s “My Twenty Testicles” line gave me a laugh.
Yeah it wasn’t really halloweeny but it wasn’t totally off the mark. Alien’s trying to kill and cook people was used in the first Halloween special. And the ending of the segment was a little disturbing (Homer slowly suffocating the alien with a pillow while scientists begin the disection/Vivisection) .
The second was just for over the top gore. Having Homer and Marge try to kill each other is a bizarre twist.
I was disapointed by the final segment (Though I liked homer going through the hammock after complaining about already being punished) it could have worked better if the kids had died and spent eternity being punished via tricks rather than a quick “we learned our lesson!” ending.
