Sims 3

It’s CTRL+SHIFT+C. And the edit in cas command doesn’t seem to work.

I picked a bad trait thinking it was a good trait…

I picked ‘light sleeper’ thinkinking “Ooo that means my player won’t need much sleep because he sleeps light”

But what it actually means is “Damn my player has a hard time sleeping so it takes $%)¬|ng ages for him to get to well rested state”

Is there a non-cheating/console way of ‘fixing’ this? I’m thinking of starting the game again from scratch. I’ve got my guy trained up in quite a lot of areas (highest - cooking - 7) and done quite a lot of things. It’s be a sod if I had to do all that again. But this sleep thing is a real pain in the backside.

If you get enough aspiration points you can take the “Mid-life crisis” reward and change your traits.

Ah, very handy for making sure things match or just selecting a color! Sometimes I have trouble getting what I want from a wheel and it helps to have swatches to look at.

I like my items to coordinate sometimes and I was going about crazy looking for an eyedropper-type tool for styles. You know, I just wanted to pick up the pattern and color from my lamp and use it for my couch, so the two would match, but the eyedropper tool only lets you copy objects or wallpaper/carpet, not just the colors/pattern. I finally figured out how to do this. Open the Create a Style tool and click on the item you want to copy the style from (like the lamp in my case). You can then click on the little set of dots next to the swatches and drag that whole style to another item (like my couch). You know, now that I look at the “Lessons” for Create a Style this is all covered there. I guess I should RTFM, huh? Looks like you can also you can also drag the individual color swatches or patterns to other items or swap the patterns for a single object (make the main pattern the detail pattern and vice versa). Cool!

I am starting to uncover and enjoy some of the little details thrown in to the game. For example, cheap objects sometimes produce little negative moodlet events. I just got one for “Tastes like Fridge” from eating leftovers from a cheap fridge. Earlier my Sim also got a cold blast of water from the cheap shower and wasn’t too happy about that, either. Funny, though! And I’m totally going to start saying leftovers that have picked up other flavors from being left in the refrigerator too long “taste like fridge”.

Also, anyone else found SimHenge yet? (I have no idea if that’s what it’s called, I just made that name up.)

Yeah, I’ve found SimHenge. And the mine with the creepy eyes blinking at you.

Got it, playing it, good stuff.

How the hell do you get married? I only get ‘Romantic’ options like kiss, hold hands etc. No option for even ‘go steady’, which I did have previously (before my sim broke up with his girlfriend). They’re both young adults (I hope).

You have to keep flirting and kissing until the other sim thinks your sim is “very irresistible” or something like that. And then “confess attraction.” Then “go steady.” then “propose.” A lot of people are having trouble with that.

On the subject of ghosts, when someone dies and there’s another Sim in the household, there’s a small chance that local Science employer will offer to resurrect the deceased. The technology to do so is still in the experimental stage so it’s only able to produce a ghost. A playable ghost and, if it’s the ghost of a young adult or adult, can produce baby ghosts!

I have a few questions about the game. I just picked it up this morning, and despite my reasoned thought not to get xaught up in playing all day, I did.

Anyway: I created a young adult married couple and began. I had a difficult time getting them to woohoo. Its not like in Sims 2 where a few kisses and flirting could get to that point. As a matter of fact, they could not interact until they were in the bed. If I tried to click on the “other” the game switched to that character instead of giving me an interaction menu. Am I doing something wrong?

I quit just after they had their first child. But looking at the map of Sunset Valley i don’t see any elementary schools just the school for the gifted. Do all of the kids, from young children to teens go there? Also, what about college. Lacking a sims 3 university as of yet, what happens when the kids reach that age?

Sorry for all of the questions. I’m just curious.

So perhaps I was a little too hasty with my dismissal. I guess the idea of microtransactions put a really bad taste in my mouth. Did I mention I hate microtransactions? Anyway, after scouring the forums and hearing some of the neat little features I decided to give it another try. Here is a list of pros and cons compared to the previous games.

Pros:

  • The build/buy interface is much improved. I like how you can click on specific features in the little house diagram to sort what you’re looking for. Need a nightstand? Click on bedroom, then click on the little picture of the nightstand. It’s much more intuitive than searching through ambiguous tabs, although that method still exists if you prefer it. I also like how the continuous fill and bulldoze modes are given buttons on the main interface.

  • Rooms can be resized by clicking and dragging on handles, like a paint program. Very nice.

  • You can place objects diagonally.

  • The personality traits are a great addition. You can now make some really unique and complex sims, much like the real people they’re modeled after. Each personality trait has unique features that often come in the form of special social actions. A perfectionist can point out someone’s flaws, for instance. They also take longer to do things, but their finished products are better.

  • You can adjust the time it takes for a sim to age, or turn aging off completely.

  • Create a style is neat. I haven’t really put a lot of energy into it, but I can see how sim architects would eat it up.

  • Removing the comfort and environment motives was a nice move. They were redundant and unnecessary.

  • Load times are much better.

  • The seamless neighborhood is an impressive concept. I like how you can zoom out in real time to get a galactic view of your world, like Spore. It’s not fully realized, though. I’ll go into that below.

  • Job performance is made up of several different things that are unique to each profession, instead of just flat mood+friends+skills. A sim in the business career has to suck up to his boss, while a journalist has to review venues and work on writing skills. You no longer have to make a certain number of friends to get a promotion, thank god. You can also keep getting raises even while at the top of a career path.

  • Sims are more autonomous, and at the same time more responsive to commands. They no longer starve themselves to death while painting, and they’ll actually clean up after themselves unless in a hurry.

  • Moodlets are fun to read. Mmm tastes like fridge.

  • I’m glad that the challenge is still there. I’m one of the few simmers that doesn’t cheat and actually enjoys the challenge of moving up in a career while taking care of a sim’s needs. I was afraid they were going to make it a more casual friendly virtual pet game. They did, but all the changes were for the best. They only cut down on the more annoying micromanaging aspects, and there’s still plenty of challenging objectives.
    Cons:

  • I hate the way the new sims look. They all have round cherub faces and plastic skin. It’s hard to explain, but they look uncanny and… off. While I was easily able to make sims of my friends in family in Sims 2, I’m having a much harder time in this one. Making a thin or gaunt face is next to impossible. They’re too much like Barbie dolls.

  • Animations are stiff and unnatural. I was really impressed with the way the sims moved in Sims 2. They looked amazingly human and you could imagine what they were saying just by their gesturing and inflections. One of my favorite animations in Sims 2 was when you were creating a teen. He would tap his leg in boredom and look around with this sardonic look on his face, like he was much too cool to be there. It was so much like something a real teen male would do, and always made me smile. None of that charm is in Sims 3. Animations are more vague and spartan, and sometimes downright confusing. My sims will often do this walk like an Egyptian pose while chatting. It’s off putting.

  • Like I said above, the seamless neighborhood isn’t fully realized. From the press they were making it sound like you could follow your sim anywhere. But most of the community lots are rabbit holes, so you’ll be doing a lot of waiting while your sim disappears to work. In essence it’s exactly like the previous games, so the hype is misleading. I’m staying at my sim’s house for 90% of the time just like the previous games.

  • There is a shocking dearth of items, hair, and clothing. Hair especially. There’s only about 14 styles for men, and they’re mostly feathery emo things. No curly hair, no straight long hair, no plain short hair. No piano, hot tub, or pool table, which are sims staples. Very few desks. No office chair. Which brings me to…

  • Microtransactions. They’re the scourge of online gaming. Releasing items a few months down the road in place of an expansion pack? That’d be annoying, but reasonable. But they’re selling stuff right out of the gate. Making us pay for items when there are so few to begin with is pretty insulting. Yeah you get 1,000 “free” points when you register, but the prices are ridiculous. 20 bucks for one set of furniture, which is normally the price of a full expansion pack. Nice try EA, but I’m sure few people will fall for this money suck.

:smack:

Huh. These people aren’t usually wrong.

From what I can scour, it looks like the edit in cas cheat was erroneously printed in the Prima guide and no longer works.

I’ve got to level 10 in the culinary profession and was rewarded with a ‘Minusone Kelvin Refrigerator’. Does anybody know that stats on that? You can’t buy it and I can’t find out how to view them otherwise. I can sell it for $4,000 but I don’t need the money.

I have a question:

If I create a sim or sims to be neighbors with my currently played family and put them in the house nextdoor, will they go about their business and age and stuff even if I’m not playing them?

Also, how do you place a sim in a house when you have another sim or sims in that game you are playing. I might be missing the option to do that in the start screen.

Yes, but you can turn that off if you want. Unless you’re on a Mac, in which case you need to wait..

You need to go into Edit Town. Create your new Sim(s) if you have not already done so, select them from the Sim bin, and click Place Copy.

I haven’t gotten the game yet, and I’m still kind of on the fence if I want to.

I don’t like that you now have to pay for downloaded items from EA. Will I be able to download stuff from other websites (as you can with Sims 2), or has that been somehow disabled?

It appears that custom content is possible but not as easy to make. There are already mods coming out.

I haven’t played The Sims since the first one but I’m enjoying this one. I love the character development/advancement.

I’m disappointed by the lack of usable objects though. I don’t mean the small selection of baths, chairs, etc. I mean items like pinball manchines, hot tubs, something for my Sim to do with all the time you get off when you’ve mastered a profession.

I get the feeling they intentionally left things out to sell future expansion packs. Maybe that’s SOP with EA now but it still stings a bit.

I noticed that too, but of course it is SOP. Igf they gave up all of that stuff in this game they’d have nothing to sell the expansions.

Um, the babysitter stole my child! He was over for a party and when it was over, picked up the baby, walked outside, and disappeared. She is no longer on the side of the screen, but she is still in the family tree.

That is so strange.
