Whilst playing the Sims, I have now twice received the message by telephone that the end is near. I have also received a call that said to be careful answering the door because they were coming.
Huh? Is this going to be a big let down, or is my sim on the verge of a massive government conspiracy?
They don’t mean anything. Just like in real life, it doesn’t always pay to answer every single phone call you get. If it’s not important information about your friends or your job, unimportant phone calls may have a monetary reward in them for you. The rest are a useless waste of your time-like the ones you mention. Too bad Sims don’t have Caller ID…

I remember reading somewhere that your sim could be abducted by aliens. I haven’t seen it happen yet.
c_goat, your sim can be abducted by aliens if they use the telescope for a long period of time. I’ve seen it happen several times, so it’s no rumor.
As for “The end is near” phone call, it’s meaningless. Some players have theorized that it increases the chance of getting burglarized, but I’ve never noticed that to be the case.
