Singers that Sound Just Alike

I remember when Stone Temple Pilots first came out, I was certain the singer was doing his best to be Eddie Vedder.

Also on the oldies stations they play a song by some band (the Knickerbockers?) called “Lies” and claim that when it was released, people believed it was a new Beatles song. It does sound a lot like John Lennon singing.

Any other examples of singers or bands sounding so much alike it borders on mimicry?

Rod Stewart and Melissa Etheridge and Bonnie Tyler

Tom Petty and Bob Dylan

George Harrison and Jeff Lynne

Any number of lead singers and Eddie Vedder. It seems that doing an Eddie Vedder affectation became the standard for a while there.

Way back when, when I first heard STP, I thought that the lead singer was doing a Vedder impression. It wasn’t until later that I realized how different it was, comparitively. Bands like Creed and Stained come to mind immediately, but just from flicking past stations on the radio, I know there are a lot more.

I am gonna expand it a tad by naming 2 bands that sound the same.

Static-X and Ministry.

Its kinda funny. Static-X does Ministry better than Ministry can do Ministry nowadays. Although old ministry is better than any of the Static-X stuff.

Singers: Scott Stapp and Eddie Vedder. I know its already been said, but they sound just alike. And that dude from the Vines, or White Stripes, or whatever, sounds and acts just like Mick Jagger.

Dennis DeYoung (Styx) and Freddie Mercury (Queen).

Adam Duritz (Counting Crows) and Van Morrison.

Early Van Morrison (when he was with Them) and Mick Jagger (Stones).

At times, Janis Joplin and Steven Tyler.

I thought Jon B and Babyface sounded very similar in their “Someone To Love” duet.

I can think of several times when I heard a song on the radio and was sure the singer was somebody else. Sometimes, I didn’t figure out my mistake untilo months later.

  1. I heard Bonnie Tyler’s “It’s a Heartache” dozens of times before I realized it wasn’t Rod Stewart.

  2. When I first saw “Rocky III” at my local movie theater, I was sure that Journey was the band singing “Eye of the Tiger” (that guy in Survivor sounded just like Steve Perry).

  3. Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits sounds a lot like Bob Dylan… or, rather, he sounds the way I WISH Dylan still sounded.

  4. Mark Storace of Krokus sounded almost exactly like the late Bon Scott of AC/DC.

I think my eyeballs just burst. I don’t see that at all.

But early 80s Noddy Holder (name that band!) and Freddie of the time sounded a lot alike.

Matt Monroe and Frank Sinatra.
Terry Stafford and Elvis.

John Mayer and Dave Matthews

if you compare “Mr. Roboto” to other Queen songs, then there is somewhat of a resemblance. But Styx ballads like “Lady” don’t really strike me as similar at all to Queen songs.

Sometimes I’ve thought Billy Joel has sounded like Elton John (even before they went on tour together), only not quite as good.

And there was a brief period in the 80’s when I swear I couldn’t tell Paul Williams and Rosemary Clooney apart. They even sort of looked alike. Frightening.

Faith Hill and Leann Rimes.

That band would be Slade and their heyday was the mid-late 1970’s. They, not Quiet Riot wrote Cum On Feel The Noize and Mama We’re All Crazee Now.

The lead singer of America, who sang “Horse with No Name” sounds so much like Neil Young that I bet Young gets requests for that song to this day…

Olivia Newton John and John Travolta?

Mick Jagger and Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist of The Hives.

Hootie and The Blowfish and Creed
