Erm…so this is the first time this ever happened to you? Lucky you.
Yeah, go down to the store and get yourself some big-time sinus medicine, it’ll say “SINUS” on the package. It’s usually a combination of pseudoephedrine (what’s in Sudafed) and some kind of pain reliever, plus it may have antihistamine in it, too, which also acts as a nose-drier-upper. The more “stuff” in it, the better, IMO.
Don’t try to operate heavy machinery while you’re zonked on sinus medication.
Gelcaps are easier to swallow.
Push the fluids–hot soup, cold pop. Hot works better than cold. Swallowing fluids helps keep the mucus liquid so your body can better get rid of it, and the act of swallowing helps keep things moving along, in the back of your throat and your Eustachian tubes.
Speaking of Eustachian tubes, always blow your nose with your mouth hanging idiotically open. Stops the glop from backing up into your ears.
And speaking of ears, if you get a really bad earache in one or both ears, that’s a “middle ear infection” and if it just keeps getting worse and worse, over a day or two, go see a doctor, because you can get a ruptured eardrum (not a crisis, but a painful nuisance–no showers for 6 weeks.) Antibiotics will help a middle ear infection, but not for a couple of days.
Don’t bother going to the doctor and begging for antibiotics for a sinus infection alone, unless it gets to the point where you’re having a high persistent fever, like over 101 for a couple of days, or like I said, if you get a really bad earache. Then go see a doctor. Otherwise, join the crowd–we just tough it out.
Overprescribing of antibiotics for simple sinus infections is getting to be a problem in the medical community, as it leads to antibiotic-resistant bugs, so many doctors won’t give you antibiotics just for sinus.
Also investigate the possibility of a vaporizer, if you’re home with nothing in particular to do. Cool mist is safer, but steam works better.
Also–don’t laugh–Vicks Vaporub helps, too. And those Halls Mentholyptus cough drops–actually any cough drop with those nice stinky menthol and eucalyptus fumes.
And my personal preference in this situation is for Puffs[sup]R[/sup] Brand nose-wipers, with or without lotion, as IMO they’re, overall, softer and easier on your poor sore nose.
