Sir Francis Drake's Drum

Anybody know anything about a drum that belonged to the English privateer and navigator, Sir Francis Drake? Supposedly, it is keptin a castlein Englans, and it makes sounds when England is in danger…that’s what I heard anyway.
Where is this drum now, and doesit actually emit noise?

Picture of the drum here. It’s at the Buckland Abbey Maritime Museum in Devon, England. Looks like it could still beat, yes.

I doubt it would actually beat supernaturally, but that didn’t stop Henry Newbolt from writing a great poem about it.

A larger photo of the drum.

It’s entirely incidental, but I remembered that either the drum itself or a replica had been on the reconstruction of the Golden Hinde in Brixham when I went round that as a kid. In recent years I’d come across the Golden Hinde replica moored in Southwark and had always presumed it was the same ship that I’d been on as a kid. It was only on seeing this thread that I Googled to see if I could confirm that vague childhood memory about the drum. I couldn’t, but I did discover that there are in fact two replicas of the boat. One of which is still in Brixham.

Sometimes the surprising stuff you learn as a result of the SDMB isn’t even on the board.
