Sister insisting I see her psychic. Help!

IF you go, simply don’t speak. Make sure your sis doesn’t either. The psycho I mean ic, gets her hints from your body language and little hints you give her. If you say nothing and sit still she will fall flat.
I know this, only because I read tarot cards.
I warn those I read for, in advance, that I am a charlatan. They still give me all the information I need to make them leave open mouthed.
I would never accept payment of any kind, and I don’t read for the same person twice.

Luckily, Ian Rowland is actually a fellow doper. Search on his username, ianzin, and you’ll be able to find a link to his homepage under his user profile. He’s made some very insightful posts on the subject of psychic scams here on the SDMB. Hopefully, he does vanity searchs and finds this thread.

That would be the Full Facts Book Of Cold Reading.

Be polite, drop a few false hints, agree to some wrong guesses, let the con artist supply lots of details about a non-existant person, job, or what-have-you.

My sister insisted that I go to the Sterling Men’s group weekend with my bro-in-law, who has been a member of that group for years. I said no for about three or four years, until finally she had me alone on a hike.

“I really think you should do the Weekend. Xxxxx says it’s great and a really incredible experience.” Etc.

No thanks.

“No, really. This Sterling thing blah blah blah… better man!”

“No, really, I’m not interested. I don’t know anything about this Sterling character, and why should I want to be more like him and less like me? What does he have to offer?”

“Dodgy evasive answer, followed by yet another request for attendance.”

“Hey, I have an idea. Why don’t you, him, and me all go down to the Church of Scientology Celebrity Center for the weekend? It’s the best thing since sliced tomatoes.”

“No thanks.”

“OK, I’ll respect your wishes as an adult and not bring up the subject anymore.”

It took a while for this to sink in, but it finally did. Lo and behold, two or three years later my bro-in-law left the Sterling Men’s group and my sister dropped out of the Women’s Aux or whatever they called it.

I don’t hear about it anymore.

And no, I’m not really a Scn, but I really did suggest it to my sis.

I would go for the entertainment value and insist that your sister sit BEHIND the psychic. At least no visual clues can be used (still be able to hear audible clues).

I have told my New-Agey sister in law such things offend my religious belief.

Shut her up cold.

Mrs. RickJay tried this some time ago. Worked like a charm; the psychic couldn’t get anything right.

As Zebra and MrVisible have pointed out, though, this tactic will not work for the OP. The psychic has already gotten all the goods they need from the OP’s sister.
