sites down due to Sandy?

io9’s server hasn’t responded since last night. I was wondering if this was storm related.

I suspect so. After a bit of googling I see they are owned by Gawker Media, many or all of whose sites have gone down from the storm. I tried clicking the links to the various sites and got the same “connect to upstream server timedout” message from them, including io9.

So far, all of the New York City webcams I’ve tried to connect to to see how things look have been down as well.

Yeah, Gawker tweeted that they would be down.

LifeHacker is down due to storm.

I wish I knew how to keep a website up during a storm. I hear there’s a website with a lot of neat tricks like that to help you out in your daily tasks.

It’s fair to ask why GawkerMedia doesn’t have redundant servers in another location, like the west coast. For a company their size with their traffic volume, the cost (and IT effort) is trivial.

I’ve been unable to log onto commercial NY websites today.
