"Six By Sondheim" documentary on HBO Monday

Heads up, musical lovers! HBO will air “Six by Sondheim” tomorrow night at 9pm. I heard this reviewed on NPR to great excitement and acclaim. I’m excited to see it, but I have choir rehearsal, so will have to DVR and watch another time. Apparently it has newly-staged numbers filmed just for the doc, along with archival performances, and is directed by James Lapine.

Thank for the heads up.

There was a special birthday concert for Sondheim awhile back - I think on PBS - that was quite good. They also just recently aired “Company” on PBS as well.

If I were Sondheim, I would be getting suspicious that maybe everyone knows something that my own doctor hasn’t told me…

Sondheim was born on March 22, 1930, making him 83 years old. And Hal Prince will be 86 next month. I’m afraid Broadway is destined to lose two of its absolute greatest soon.

Never have I longed for HBO more. :frowning:

Wow, that was great. I’ll be watching it again, many times. Of course, my favourite bit was “Opening Doors” from Merrily We Roll Along, a Sondheim flop which has recently had an amazing West End revival, soon to be released on Digital Theatre for download, and screened in cinemas!

Lots of great archival footage; I was especially moved by the recording of “Being Alive” from Company, an OCR I am very familiar with, but have never seen the footage before. Wow, Dean Jones was an AMAZING Bobby. Neil Patrick Harris was good too, of course

I also agree with the NPR reviewer – more! SIX MORE!
