OK, I watched the episode, but I was on call last night and had to deal with some work-related stuff.
Can somebody describe what the commotion at the art show was? Was that Russell trying knock over Jimmy’s sculpture or something like that?

Brenda’s not prone to actual violence or poisoning, is she? Or is there stuff about her that I’ve forgotten? She always seemed a bit of a flake, but not a dangerous, malevolent one. The most I’d imagine her doing is shouting a bit and then leaving.
I figured there might be a whole “Circle of Life” kinda thing with Nathaniel, Sr dying in the first episode, and Nathaniel, Jr dying in the last. But it’s not late enough in the season for Nate to be dead. Maybe he’ll linger in a coma??
I got nothin’
Yep, that was Russell attacking Jimmy’s sculpture, which he thought looked like a penis. He was drunk.
He’s grown a moustache – looks good on him.
She had a baby in June, so she was probably very pregnant during filming.
The story line about Brenda’s baby possibly having some kind of birth defect makes me think that Nate isn’t dead (yet), but paralyzed, dependent on machines to breathe, etc.
Do you think that fits? Defective baby – defective daddy – decisions to make about quality of life. ??
If it hadn’t been for the scene where Brenda was clearly showing signs of jealousy, I’d agree with you. Why else would she call Maggie a “little harpy” (or something along those lines). She was also clearly jealous last week at the funeral home when she saw Nate & Maggie having a private conversation.
Has nothing to do with Lisa. It’s not that he doesn’t have the legal ability, it’s that he doesn’t have the desire or skill.
IMHO, she only invited him back as a substitute for the nanny she threw out. She was willing to put up with his humping only as payment, not out of desire or passion.
Again, this episode was worth watching. Now, if they can just build on the momentum.
I didn’t recognize Russell. He looked thisclose to pushing a shopping cart and talking to lamposts. The bit with the lollipop fight made me laugh, especially Olivier’s blase’ comment, “Oh, look, theater!” He has always made me laugh.
I have no use for Vanessa any longer. She’s become a user, just like her sister. Sorry, she needs to meet with an unfortunate accident.
Nate’s AVM or whatever looks like it’s back. How much you wanna bet that he’s going to be having a conversation with Sr. soon – perhaps with God and the Devil over a parcheesi board?
I wish he hadn’t bagged Maggie. She seemed so uncorruptable. I just want one person on this show over 18 to NOT be soul-twisted.
I thought Nate failed the mortician’s exam (or whatever it’s called) way back when. ?
Butg we got to see her puffies!
The “Oh, look, theater” line was just classic during the ‘fight’. Olivier is just a great character.
You know even if Nate has an alibi because he had a stroke or something (that can always be a good reason to not go), I think Brenda will find out what he did before it. I’m sure a doctor will ask and I bet Brenda walks in as Maggie tells him.
Could be, but I have no memory of that happening. He always hated the business so I can’t imagine him even taking the exam. I checked the HBO bio, but it doesn’t reference anything about him ever taking the exam either, just that he wanted to sell out to Kroehner after Nate Sr.'s accident.
I’m still laughing about that. I also laughed when he was in the kitchen fighting with Brenda in his whiney, annoying, I’m-so-mature-because-I-have-crazy-life-experience-and-I-even-used-to-live-in-Seattle voice, “I don’t want to go anywhere Brenda! I’m sorry but I’m not going anywhere!”
“Well I gotta go to work!”
Nate is the most realistic complete idiot I’ve ever seen on my TV. His idiocy is so beautifully nuanced that it’s like there’s an actual idiot right there in my living room every time he’s on screen.
The Maggie thing doesn’t make that much sense to me. I know she’s a lonely, horny travelling salesperson but she knows Nate’s a big loser. She’s had all those conversations with him where he acted like a complete loser. Maybe she’s into that. It seems like every time she’s been in the same room with him he’s been acting like a dumb slut. He’s so transparent that she should be able to see his idiocy too. I’ve never suddenly aquired a step-brother in midlife but if I ever do and he acts like Nate, I don’t think I’m going to have sex on the couch with him. Especially not if he insists on bringing his pregnant wife to my church and standing up and giving a dorky hallmark card speech. Ugh. Please, God, don’t ever let me get that horny and lonely. I’m singing for my life here.
That whole green funeral idea sounds like a really good idea if you are a jerk who thinks his brother and business partner’s whole careers as professional embalmers and restorative corpse artists are a big stupid hypocritical waste of time. If I was David and/or Rico I would have been really depressed that Nate was in my life at all. The only reason Nate’s in the business is that they could never seem to find someone better when they needed someone. What an insultingly ignorant and stupid idea. If I were Rico I’d be trying to think of a way to buy out Nate and tell Nate to go out and buy a damn cemetary if that’s what he wants to do and then he can throw bodies in holes all day long if he thinks that’s such a great plan. Good luck, hippie!
I really hate Nate! I hope he has that thing where you can’t move or talk but you’re completely conscious and trapped in your own body.
I remember when Nate passed the exam and got his license. He definitely has it.
I really thought Maggie would be able to hold out and deny Nate. Why would you sleep with a man whose wife you know is pregnant? That seems to undermine all her righteous goodness. I guess everyone on this show has to be screwed up.
Nate initally failed and then passed the funeral director’s exam. He never trained to be a mortician (and who can blame him).
I agree with those who say Nate Jr will end up dead like Nate Sr.
Indeed. Notable, I think, for being the first woman in this show I can ever recall being shown having sexual relations without her bra on.
Seriously. I’d have to go back and look at all the episodes again, but every single time I can recall seeing a sex scene, the woman was wearing a bra. I can respect that the actresses involved maybe don’t want to do the nudity thing, but that approach just seems fake to me. One of those little nitpicks I have about a show that I really like otherwise.
But then Nate jumps up out of the post sex cuddle and he has his shorts on. I can’t see where he had an appropriate moment to put those on between sex and spooning. The only thing I can picture is that Maggie sat there in nihilistic self loathing pretending to be a good sport while Nate cheerfully put on his shorts and got back on the couch for some cuddling action, completely oblivous to her misery, then she started to cry and finally he noticed she wasn’t okay. Given what an idiot Nate is maybe that’s what was supposed to have happened.
It’s weird that you never get to see Brenda’s boobs but you got to see her last boyfriend’s wang bouncing around while he ran around with no clothes on. At least you got to see it if you backed up and watched it frame by frame.
I’m glad to learn that I am not the only person in the world who did this. The blessings of the Digital Age!
He did, but I think that was just for being a funeral director. Embalming requires a different license.
