4 men, 3 years of friendship, 1 Spring break, 2 peaks, 4 days of skiing.
Me and my roommates have lived together for coming on 3 years now, we’ve got an amazing dynamic of friendship among us and it may end after this semester so we’re doing it. We’re taking the trip of a life time. We started out budgeting figuring out how much we could spend each. $600. Alright. Now what can we do?
Skiing. 2 of the guys haven’t ever been skiing and 2 of us have and love it. Sounds like a plan.
Where? Jay Peak Vermont. 5 miles from Canada. The mountain gets the most snow on the east coast. It isn’t a party spot so it won’t be packed for Spring break. And that’s fine for our crowd, we’re the quiet geek folk.
How? We’re road tripping it. From Atlanta to Jay Peak is going to be a hell of a drive, we’re planning either 1 super long day of driving if we rotate drivers, or 2 days depending on weather and mountain road conditions. I honestly don’t think the roommates understand the implications of snow driving on the way up. But we’ll see. We’ve got almost 2 months of planning ahead of us.
I have to admit I’m absurdly excited about this trip. It’s a rite of passage, a bildungsroman as my high school English teacher said. 1 of us is already a grad student, 1 is about to be, I’m a failure on the rebound and 1 is still in school for a while more.
So, advice for us? I’ve learned that SDMB is the greatest place for advice so I appeal to you all and your collective genius again, help us make this trip better than ever. Here’s our budget so far:
Each person’s aimed budget: $600
Ski lift ticket (4 day): $140 (unconfirmed for our dates)
Equipment: $110 (unconfirmed for our dates)
Gas cost: $85 (Estimated $350 for round trip in gas, found $340 = 4 * $85 and so rounded there.)
T-shirt: $25 (I’ve demanded we all get t-shirts to also commemorate the trip and budgeted this much for it, because let’s face it - they might just be this expensive.)
Food: (unknown)
Room: (unknown)
Total each currently: $360
Spending room left: $240
