Skill-less videogames putting me off

Hello all,

I went ahead a while back and shelled out for a shiny, shiny Playstation 3. Since then I’ve tried hard to get excited about the games out there, but I find myself butting up against the same issue time and time again.

There’s just no challenge to the vast majority of them!

There’s this new breed of game out there, the “cinematic experience”. Ooooh, look, shiny! See the pretty in game graphics!

The only problem is that gameplay seems pretty much along the lines of “run around, press X to climb/jump/talk/activate/scratch your ass.” Context sensitive actions? Kiss my ass. Oh yeah, and “mash O to fight. For variety, try mashing square as well. Press a shoulder button to activate a cool graphical effect and instantly kill everyone!”

Assassin’s Creed looks awesome to be sure. But it’s just a movie where you have to keep on using the remote to advance the plot!

Quite frankly, I spend most of my gaming time on my aging PC, playing Medieval Total War, because I know that if I get anywhere on the harder settings, it’s because I worked for it.

Anyone able to recommend interesting, enjoyable skill-based PS3 games before I lose patience and sell it to pay for a PC upgrade to be able to play Medieval 2?

Cheers,
David

Medieval: Total War is more challenging than M2.

Just to save you from disappointment.

Well, that certainly would be a disappointment, considering the vast amounts of money I’d have to pay to upgrade my PC to play it!

Maybe. In Medieval 1, you could amass a MONSTER pile of cash before the Mongolians came and everyone turned against you. You also have to keep your shipping lines intact. In Medieval 2, you’ve got unit build limits. I dunno.

I’m not so sure about Assassin’s creed. I couldn’t tell from your post wether you’ve played it or not. I haven’t played it myself, but from what I’ve heard it’s pretty sandboxy, not so linear. I don’t know about the difficulty. My friend will be getting it in a couple of days if you want second hand information.

I’m judging from the game descrip and reviews as far as Assassin’s Creed goes. Maybe I’m wrong and it’s really an involving, challenging game.

The only games I’ve really got interested in on PS3 were Fight Night Round 3 - fair skill level required once you get going - and Oblivion. I’m kinda bored on Obliv. now, as my character is uber-powerful and everything gets a bit easy.

PS3? Well there’s your problem! :stuck_out_tongue:

If you want a real challenging game, go get Guitar Hero (PS3 has backwards compatability, right? So you can get I, II, or III.) I know what you’re probably thinking…that GH is lame, and it kind of is, but it is FUN! And fucking hard on the higher difficulties.

Where do you end up if you work for it?

I don’t think the PS3 has anywhere to plug in the GH I and II controller.

Assassin’s Creed is pretty good, but not very hard, and not very long. I don’t know if I would shell out the money to buy it.

You could go for Resident Evil 4, I don’t know if they have a PS3 version, but the PS2 one should play fine.

That depends. The latest version of the PS3 hardware has had the backwards-compatability removed.

So the verdict is in; there aint nothing out there…at least not designed for this console! I’m not sure about the backwards compatability thing.

I guess I’ll stick to finding other ways to keep myself amused for the foreseeable future.

Fear Itself: uhh…conquering the entire map? That’s the point of the game, right?

Just to be sure we’re covering all the bases, isn’t there a difficulty slider in the options menu in Oblivion? I agree that it is possible to build super powerful characters, but if you have the slider set too low that could be a part of the problem.

Also, if you haven’t played the Shivering Isles expansion you should try it. It isn’t necessarily any harder, but it is a nice change up.

I don’t know if you like shooters and on-line play, but if you do let me recommend Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.
The single player mode is rather short, but it is a decent story and great game play. However, the game really comes into its own with the multiplayer aspect. You start at a low level and you get XP for kills and completing challenges. As you move up in rank you get new weapons and perks - it is an interesting system for on-line play.

The game is as real as I would ever want to experience and it is sucking up all too much of my time.

I’d love to try the online play option in some of the games I own, but I have a cringeworthy confession to make: I can’t get my PS3 online…

I thought it would hook up to my wireless network, but apparantly it doesn’t, and I have no phone points anywhere near the dratted thing.

Long cord?

To another floor?
