Skills learned in an emergency

So I finally got another job interview today. Last night I went through my traditional pre-interview obssessing makeing sure my interview clothes were clean and ready, setting and rechecking 3 different alarms. Printing out a map of the company’s location and so forth.

I so woke up to take a long relaxing shower(a two cigarette shower) to settle the nerves. I got out of the shower with a good hour to let my hair dry and get dressed, and then I noticed it. Oops, my beard was really unkempt. Interviews were slow during the holidays, so I didn’t trim it in a couple weeks. Well, that’s no problem I left myself a cushion for such eventualities, and I brought out my trusty Maverick. Oops again, it doesn’t seem to work anymore. That was a bit of a problem I didn’t have enough of a cushion to go to a store buy one, and make it back home in time. I searched through the back recesses of my bathroom stuff drawer, and found an old electric shaver(the three circle kind) that I had never used. The batteries were dead of course, but it ran fine with the cord plugged in. It had the flip up clippers on the back.

Never being all that much on hair management, I had never tried to free hand trim my beard before. I had always set the guide on the Maverick, a couple lawnmower like passes, remove the guide, clip the neck flush and be on my way in 5 minutes. Not being one of surgeon-like steady hands, I was a bit nervous, but I had to go for it, as most interviewers really arn’t looking for grizzly Adams.
It took about 20 minutes, but there were no horrible mistakes, and it looks passible much to my surprise and relief,

But there is now a new obsession on my night-before checklist. Check the batteries in the beard trimmer.
On the downside I looked at my beard like I have never looked at it before, and there is much more grey than I thought. Far to much for a 30 year-old. I’m not ready to be Galdalf dammit.

You smoke in the shower?

Gandalf indeed. My husband has accepted that his beard is graying very fast. He’s still in denial about the hair on his head, though.

Scissors also work a treat for trimming beards.
