HH, 88, or swastika tattoos would be further indicators. (Assuming they’re of a neo-nazi bent.)
There was also the twisty-finger hand sign.
Hoi Polloi is Greek, not Latin. It just means “The People.”
Pardon me while I point out to my fellow Americans that “braces” are what we call “suspenders.” Will avoid confusion.
Heh, I’m glad somebody cleared that up. I kept thinking: “Hey! Why didn’t MY orthodontist offer me red braces when I was growing up? That bastard!”
It varies by region. I know an ex-SHARP from LA who wears red shoelaces and gets confused for a Peckerwood* all the time here–in San Diego, if you wear red shoelaces it means you’ve committed a hate crime against a racial minority.
- White power --> WP --> PW --> Peckerwood. I think this is a Southern California thing.
Well, I apologize for passing on uneducated slander. A closer examination of their lyrics indicates that I’m totally wrong. If anything, they appear to be critical of racist behavior and mea culpa to the DKM’s. Thanks for fighting my ignorance. I’ll try to be a bit more critical in my thinking in the future.
“Oi!” was in fact so anti-racist that one of the the defining albums of the genre was called “Strength Thru Oi!”, and featured a nazi skinhead stamping on the front cover.
Classy stuff. :dubious:
(I’ve read Gary “Tosser” Bushell’s justification for it, but you’d have to be utterly brain dead to miss the symbolism).
e-logic, “Oi!” was hijacked by the Nazis, just like skinhead culture itself. We covered this way back in the OP.
Except that this album was put out by the “mainstream” (i.e. supposedly non-racist) Oi! collectives.
It’s cool, I’ve heard that the DKMs are racist more than once, just due to the skinhead crowds they draw. But anyone who pays attention to their lyrics will realize that isn’t the truth. Not a problem.
A sibling of mine was a skin…one of the SHARP-related sub-groups.
My opinion is that, regardless of how you perceive or identify your fashion and style choices and present them to the world, you are going to have to accept the consequences of the public perception at large.
Whether or not you are racist, if you dress like the subset racist culture that also dresses that way, then the public is going to identify you with the American History X thugs. At that point, I would let the racists and nazis have their little fashion show, and find something else to wear to be an “individual”.
Illinois nazis…I hate Illinois nazis…
Greek, yes, but it actually means ‘the many’, so it does have the connotation of ‘common people’.
