Skinheads are not racist

Not all of them anyway. Hear me out.

The skinhead subculture developed in England in the late 60s/early 70s. From what I gather, there was a lot of immigration from Jamaica at that time. These immigrants brought with them a love of ska and reggae music, and their “rudeboy” fashion sense. These immigrants mingled with working-class white kids at work and in school, and these kids began to adopt a lot of the culture and style. A lot of fashion decisions were practical (boots were important footwear in manual labor, for example, and cropped hair was an easy-to-maintain hairstyle).

So you have these kids interacting with black immigrants and adopting a lot of their culture. At the same time, punk rock is taking off. These skinheads develop their own style of punk rock, called Oi! and whose nuances we will leave to another thread. The etymology of Oi! is often debated, and the most frequent explanations are- it’s the British equivalent of ‘hey!’ and is often chanted in Oi! music, and it possibly also derived from the Latin “hoi polloi” (common people, working class). There actually is a band called Oi Polloi.

So, skinheads who adhere to the early ideals, e.g loyalty, patriotism, equality, and working class pride, and who listen to ska and reggae are refered to as “traditional” skins, hereafter called “trads.”

Late in the development of the skinhead subculture, certain fascists and neo-Nazis adopted the style of the earlier skins and created their own racist Oi! music. This is where skinheads get a bad name. The media latched onto the moniker of skinhead to refer to neo-Nazi groups, although trads refer to racist skins as simply Nazis, boneheads (because of the tendency of racist skinheads to completely shave, i.e. Bic, their heads) or Hammerskins, after a well-organized American racist skinhead organization.

But, in response to these neo-Nazi groups adopting much of skinhead culture, and giving them a bad name, a movement emerged known as SHARP, which stands for Skinheads Against Racial Prejudice. Sharps are actively involved in anti-racist action. Black, Latino, and Asian skinheads often become sharps, and can usually be found protesting KKK rallys or organizing concerts to promote equality and eradicate prejudice.

I happen to know a number of skinheads, including many Puerto Ricans. They’re regular people, with regular jobs, who enjoy listening to their style of music, who dress in boots, braces (suspenders), and tight jeans. The majority of skinheads are trads and sharps, meaning that racism is not part of their beliefs, and is something they actively protest. Many of them, proud of their working class backgrounds, get jobs in skilled labor. In fact, they are slowly but surely taking over the local pipefitter and surveyor unions, although those who are able pursue higher education- I know of a Puerto Rican sharp who is an immigration lawyer.

Not that all skinheads are angels- European skins are sometimes associated with football hooliganism. They’re often a rough-and-tumble bunch, because of their tough upbringing in the poorer sections of town. But I’m sick of them getting a bad rap- they’re just normal people who share an appreciation of Oi!, ska, and reggae music. They’re closely related to punk rockers, and both Oi! and punk music often trancends the division between the 2 groups, as do many political beliefs.

So, because this message board is dedicated to fighting ignorance, I felt the need to share. And because I know some might let loose those fightin’ words- CITE! -you will find some below.

This is Wiki’s article on sharps, although it is a bit short.

Here is the Myspace music page of Symarip- a ska group, composed entirely of black men, who have such hits as “Skinhead Moonstomp” and “Skinhead Girl” (both great songs, BTW).

Here is a picture of some white and black skinheads.

This is the Myspace music page of Red Alert, who are a good example of Oi! (New Age and In Britain are 2 of my favorite songs).

m’kay. Not sure where you’re from but I’m guessing the UK. In there US, there have been skinheads for decades. There were skinhead gangs in the 1950’s - often called “baldies”.

In the US punk rock/hardcore days in late 1970’s-early 1980’s there were skinheads. Some were racist “nazi’s” (Dead Kennedy’s with their "Nazi Punks fuck Off), and there were probably a lot more that weren’t.

Not sure your point. My point is that at least in the US there have long been a small minority of racist skin heads, and a much bigger majority of those who found it to be a fashion statement.

Care to elaborate on where you’re at and why you needed to share?

Not many Britons will know Puerto Rican skinheads.

Yeah, I’m from the US. And I thought I mentioned, I found it annoying that they all get lumped into the racist category. Your average Joe assumes skinhead = racist. This board is dedicated to fighting ignorance, and all that.

Given as skinhead for the most part just means racist people to most, it seems easier to call punkers with a bald head, “punks.”

Heck if I even slightly thought that my word for myself would make people think I was racist, I’d run away from that word as quick as possible. There’s plenty of letter combinations in the alphabet without sticking to one that’s not working.

I’m probably going to run into this in college, since I like to keep my head shaved. Thing is, though, I shave it not because of the associations it has, or because I like how it looks, but because I prefer the way it feels. I also don’t do any of the other clothing stuff in any style including a shaved head, but people will still probably be idiots.

I knew a lot of skinheads and now know a few former skinheads. They were anti-racist skinheads who’s goal was to beat up racists. The reality is that they were assholes who beat random people up but I they weren’t racists (there was a Filipino and a Jew among the ranks I knew).

If you don’t wear the uniform I doubt you’ll get too many people thinking this. Plenty of people shave or keep their hair really short now.

Having come out of the ska music scene when I was in college and played in a ska-punk band, I encountered plenty of SHARPs and a handful of racist skinheads too. While I’d take a SHARP over the racist variety any day, I found the majority of all of them to be white suburban kids who just wanted to be in gangs and lead the gang lifestyle (get drunk, do drugs, go to shows, and fight.)

Ironically, I shave my head now, though not for any kind of solidarity with anyone else. I do it because it’s low maintenance, makes me look like a badass, and I started balding at an early age.

Bingo. In the US at least the heyday of “shaved head = neonazi” seems to me to have been the 1980s. Since then it’s become a completely normal haircut for many guys - reasons vary but maybe it feels good, looks good, is easy to take care of or simply because it beats the various combover strategies for hiding thinning hair (that’s me, genetics caught up in my 20s). Looking around you see plenty of male actors, athletes and other popular figures with buzzed hair which lots of guys will then imitate. If I had to guess I’d say that one thing that helped kick this trend into high gear was when a lot of black athletes started buzzing their hair (Michael Jordan has probably got the best recognized silhouette on earth).

So unless you’re displaying some pretty overt signs of being a bigoted cretin (swastika tats or whatever) nobody is going to think that you’re a nasty person, you’re just a guy with a normal hairstyle.

Ya learn something new every day. I’d mentioned that I’d gone to see the Dropkick Mruphys who are a kick ass Irish Punk band from Boston that is well known for their rascist proclivities. The crowd was screaming “Oi! Oi! Oi!” all night and now I see what the connection is. There was no shortage of skinheads, but everyone shaves their head these days so it really doesn’t indicate anything about ones personal philosopy, except when paired with swastika tats. They are listed as an “Oi” band here.

“…the Dropkick Mruphys who are a kick ass Irish Punk band from Boston that is well known for their rascist proclivities.”

Please provide an example of their racism.

I’m just bald.

I knew a guy in Albuquerque who shaved his head because radiation treatments for his lymphoma was making his hair fall out, so he just got rid of it all. He worked for an environmental outfit, the New Mexico Public Interest Research Group (NMPIRG), and his job was soliciting donations door to door. He said one guy smirked at him and asked why he’d shaved his head, obviously expecting some sort of smart-alecky, political and/or racist explanation. My friend said that when he answered, “Because I’ve got cancer,” the guy fell all over himself apologizing.

Apart from a few celebrities (not in person), I’ve never seen anyone else with a shaved head.

I ain’t exactly worrying about it, but I know there’ll probably be some jackass who thinks my haircut means anything besides zero maintenance and effective heat loss and decides to make something of it.

I demand a cite. The DKMs are all about blue-collar pride and solidarity, and they tend to draw a hard-drinking skinhead crowd at their shows, but I would LOVE to hear how they are racist in any way.

I was a mod and scootergirl in the early 1980’sand lived and hung out with lots of skinheads then - the main ska bands (who most skinheads/rude boys were listening to) such as the Specials, Selecter, the Beat (English Beat) were all multi-racial and very much anti-racist.

It was only later on that skinheads became associated with the whole neo-Nazi thing, and the ones which were tolerant unfortunately got tarred with the same brush.

My sister went through a skinhead punk-rocker phase when she was 18. All her friends were skinheads, she listened to punk music, said oi! all the time, and shaved half of her head (dyed the other pink…I guess she was too scared to go all the way). She ran away from home and lived in a haunted house in Little Five Points. A house she shared with other skinheads. But one day I came home and found her smoking weed in our living room, with a skinheaded gentleman. I remember thinking she wanted to die that day, because our mother was due home from work at any minute.

To our parent’s pleasure, her adventures as a skinhead were short-lived. But as a ten-year-old I thought it was so cool. Which is probably why my parents were glad she wasn’t living with us at the time. Still, we have the photos as proof and the strange memories to hold onto. Like, I was with my mother the day she decided to “drop in” on my sister at her scary punk rocker house. We strolled past the kitchen and discovered a million different cereal boxes, all of them open, lined up on the kitchen table. At that moment, I wanted to live amongst the skinheads and be accepted into their wonderous society.

My sister was and still is a black woman. I’m willing to bet she was the only skinhead her high school, which was almost 100% black, ever saw.

I ran into my fair share of NF-affiliated skinheads as a Black kid growing up in the British Midlands. If I see suspender-wearin’, Doc Marten-sportin’ skins I’m going to probably steer clear unless I can tell that they’re cool.

Funny thing is, I love ska - Specials, Madness, The Beat, The Selecter, etc. But most people I know who are into these bands are pretty much button-down types. I was at a Dave Wakeling show recently and everyone there looked like they worked in an office.

Isn’t there some kind of code regarding the color of braces (suspenders) they wear? Like red means they’re racist? I haven’t seen a skinhead in yonks.

Dunno about the rest of the world, but around here it was red braces and/or red laces in the Docs which were a bit of a warning sign. That and the White Supremacist t-shirt…
