For the record, I didn’t go in there to hijack–that was not my purpose in opening the thread I mean.
Also, could you explain the difference between “note” and “warning” a little more. I mean, it’s not like there is a set number or limit to Warnings. And not every warning is as powerful (as far as banning and suspending) as the next.
So why distinguish between what is a warning or not a warning. Is a warning documented and a note is not? Something like that?
Giraffe already brought this up, but I’ll expand a bit. A number of posters, within the past two years or so, brought to our attention their confusion about when the mods were posting a warning, and when they were posting to put the thread back on track, provide a less serious remonstration of a poster’s actions (i.e., more guidance than anything), or other moderator duty that doesn’t quite reach the level of an official warning.
In most cases, I don’t post warnings because, in most cases, what happens doesn’t warrant an official record. A minor reprimand is usually all it takes; if the problem continues, then the warnings tend to get handed out.
Also, since I usually announce when I’m correcting a thread title, removing a duplicate post, or separating an accidental post into a new thread (as was originally intended and requested), I tend to address the poster by name. Beforehand, when I used “Mod Note:” for everything, posters seeing that as my post title felt confused about whether they were being warned; nowadays, that confusion is (mostly) gone.
As the OP also says, I think a playful one line side comment in MPSIMS is pretty damn innocent. It might be better to give a poster the benefit of the doubt in circumstances like this. Perhaps readers could insert an implied smiley. Some people don’t like using them.
I don’t understand. What exactly is this “Tiddy Bear” supposed to do? I can’t really tell from the pics. Judging from the responses, is it some kind of strange furry maritial aid?
And I agree the Mod was a little too quick on the trigger. A one-off wisecrack doesn’t seem like much of a hijack to me. Let’s not take all the fun out of the boards in the interest of orderliness.
No. I had just read that Tiddy Bear thread, and I went to the site in the video. I was going to post the link and say “It’s real, here’s the website from the video”. Actually, at first I was going to call the 1-800 number to check, but then noticed the website.
Anyway, there was already a post mentioning the website, so there was no need for my post. But, I still had the URL in my clipboard apparantly.
And Mods, you can close this thread. My question’s been answered.
Could I get a little more clarification about this? I’ve commented about someone’s sig. before in a thread in GD. My apologies if it wasn’t appropriate. Hopefully, my comments were more playful than snarky, but it’s all about perception and perspective, I suppose.
Since there are no threads which talk about people’s sigs. that the person with the sig. start themselves, this makes any comment about a person’s sig. a potential hijack. And since it’s difficult to point out the sig. in a different context since the person can change their sig. at a moment’s notice and the change in context can change the perception of the sig., that makes commenting about any sig. in any other context highly unlikely despite the content.
Is it impermissible to comment about another person’s sig. in any other thread than a Pit thread? This would seem to give slightly objectionable sigs. more leeway since most people aren’t willing to garner enough rage to comment on a sig. in a Pit thread. Even starting a Pit thread for a sig. would, I think, be enough cause for people to Pit the thread starter for Pitting something so insignificant.
Are there other ways to comment on a sig. besides starting a Pit thread?
Are you new at this or something? Have you read the articles upon which this message board is founded? A Straight Dope without snark is like alcohol free beer.
It was a quick zing at a wide target. You can’t give people on this board straight lines like that. Bosda either ignored the line or laughed it off. I reccommend you do the same.
i can understand if it’s GQ, but what is more mundane than remarking that to a poster (known for large annoying sigs that changes frequently) in MPSIMS? isn’t MPSIMS the best forum to go off topic on something?
I use Moderator Notes: for any moderator actions I take that are not an official, documented warning. That could be from as little as changing the title to as much as a three paragraph screed to a poster.
