By the way, just so you know I am starting to completely HATE yahooanswers. Okay that said:
For those of you (if any) that are playing the new game Skyrim: I’m having a problem with the Crystal quest. I’m at the part where you have to line up all the lens and direct either heat or ice to the crystal to make the lights move. Here are my problems:
The lens’ don’t move at all. I don’t know if they’re completely supposed to, but everything I’ve seen (through youtube) seems to point to that they are supposed to move when you hit ‘E’ (activate).
I don’t see any light beams at all. (Could this be a graphic problem? Just my light setting on my computer)
And 3. I finally got annoyed enough to search for a cheat… I found one (two actually but I digress). It’s CAQ (complete all quests) when I have tried this one (twice) I keep getting the game all messed up and it jumps from quest to quest to quest to quest and won’t let me stop it jumping. I don’t want to complete ALL quests, just THIS one.
Is there ANYTHING I can do? I need to complete this one to go any farther in the game.
Thank you.
You’re supposed to cast flames or ice on the thingy above the giant sphere until the light points to places on the wall above where the glass balls can catch it. Then click the switches on the panel to rotate the glass balls to catch the light beams. If you can’t see the light beams that could be a blocker. I think there is a console command to complete the current quest, maybe try that?
There are three buttons that, when pushed, rotate the crystals mounted rotating rings on the wall. It’s a little confusing because the quest arrow only hovers over the center button, but there are three buttons.
Heat and frost spells move the lenses attached to the apparatus in the center of the room. I find it easiest to use heat and frost to position one spot of light on one of the rotating rings, run back up to the buttons until I have positioned the wall mounted crystal under the beam of light and then go do the next one.
I don’t know what to tell you about not seeing a beam of light, that does sound like a graphic problem, but is it possible that you haven’t initiated the action yet? IIRC, you need to have a conversation with the annoying mage from the Synod and you also have to insert the focusing crystal that one of the Falmer drop.
First, double-check that you are the point where the light is supposed to go through the temple. It sounds as though that segment hasn’t started yet. Then try it again. Quit and reload the game and give it another go.
If it still doesn’t work, check this out:
Use the codes there to reset the quest. Open the debug mode (tilde key) and type this in: “resetquest DA09” without the quote marks.
bandit: no…that’s the correct quest I’m talking about.
madmonk: I’ve tried it all, I knew they all moved the little things around so I figured that out all ready. But what do you mean ‘when the lights are going through’? When I’ve seen them played on youtube it moves automatically, I’m all the way through except I’m waiting to finish the stupid quest itself, I even asked whatshisname for help (and took the ice tome, whatever it was called, way before he told me to).
cckerberos: I tried it during night (9 pm) I tried it early morning (around 6 am) I tried it mid afternoon (noon) and later afternoon (around 2 or 3) I see absolutely NO lights anywhere.
I may just use the cheat, even though I really didn’t want to have to. Thanks for that.
I would talk to the Synod mage and see if it activates this quest. My guess is that you have not yet initiated the sequence. Once you have talked to him he will start explaining his experiments and the need for a focusing crystal. If you have already found this crystal, there is a dialogue option to tell the Synod mage this fact.
Then you and the mage walk to the apparatus, there is a the sound of machinery, and a beam of light comes through the skylight and is diffused by the lenses in the center of the room.
You insert the focusing crystal found on one of the falmer in the previous room and then go up to the plaform to push buttons to get the crytals mounted on the rotating rings in position.
I suspect your problem is that you haven’t spoken to the Synod mage, go talk to him and explore all dialogue options, it should trigger the next sequence.
madmonk: like I said I’ve spoken to the mage many times, once at the beginning of the thing, then again when I started feeling stuck and asked “what do I need to do” that’s when he tells you to align everything and use heat and ice to expand and contract the crystal. Nada. -If I remember correctly it did actually move at the very beginning, when the mage tells you to put the crystal in the machine- but since then nothing.
munch: lol I didn’t know about it (I’m not THAT much of a gamer and normally I can figure most things out by myself -or at least with a few walk-throughs) But I’ll remember for next time (hopefully there ISN’T one!)
Sorry, it sounds like it might be bugged. So you don’t see a beam of light coming through the ceiling and hitting the focusing crystal?
Have you tried walking out of the area and reentering? Sometimes that seems to unstick things.
Also, make sure you are using the heat and frost on the clear lenses, not the green focusing crystal and that you are standing close enough to them (don’t try to do it from the platform with the controls).
No. There are no beams anywhere in the whole room. No… I’ll try exiting and reentering maybe that’ll help. I’ve tried to use heat and frost from everywhere (including from the platform, but only when I was running out of ideas)… let’s see what else I can do. grumblegrumble*
okay… tried leaving and reentering, nadda. (And actually I do sort of see a bit of light but it’s REALLY REALLY REALLY hard to see - I even tried with resetting my settings for the light and everything.
anyways this is what is says when I’ve tried the cheat (and I tried different variations of the cheat -adding a . in places and capping some letter, like the ‘p’ in player).

One last thing, do you have this particular quest activated in your journal? If so, there should be an arron on your HUD. What does that arrow lead you to?
Do you have to activate cheats in Skyrim? That may be your problem, like how in Sims before doing any cheats you needed boolprop testingCheatsEnabled true, or in some games you need debugModeOn true before you used any cheats.
madmonk: yes, it’s activated, it’s been activated for about a day and half now (would have been less if it would just work!). The arrows are pointing to what they are supposed to point to: the little switch board thingy and the crystal whatchamacallit.
Jragon: from what I understand there isn’t anything to ‘turn on’ except for hitting the ‘tilde’ button (which I found this long long time ago with trying to figure out what the controls were for various things other than walking around). Other than the specif codes themselves. shrugs
I’m gonna try one more thing - I dunno what else to do if I can’t finish this one…
Are you SURE that you aligned the lenses first? You don’t see any light until you align the lenses, you have to use flame and frostbite to move the lenses in alignment and only THEN will you see the light beams (iirc).
I thought, but could be wrong, that the arrow on the “crystal whatchamacallit” went away once you inserted the green focusting crystal. Are you sure that you inserted the crystal? I just ask because sometimes when I get stuck in a game, there is one little step that I overlooked.
