I had a Dr. appt. yesterday (everything’s fine, thanks for asking) afternoon and when I left I headed over to the grocery store to pick up provisions for dinner (red beans and rice with sausage and collard greens)
As I pulled in to the Albertson’s parking lot a yellow cab pulled up in front of the Albertson’s licquor store. I parked pretty far back in the lot so I had a walk up the isle of cars and during this time I got to observe the guy in the cab.
A man who looked to be in his late 30s exited the cab veeeerrry carefully. He stopped for a moment on the sidewalk in front of the store and smoothed his hair back with both hands. He didn’t appear to be balancing well. He stumbled/staggered slowly into the licquor store. He looked like he was well and truly wasted, blotto, snockered, drunk as a skunk.
I watched in amusement as he proceeded slowly and carefully into the licquor store. Walking in a straight line was obviously a chore but he was really giving the old college try.
The cab pulled away as soon as he got out and by the time he entered the licquor store I entered the grocery store so I never saw him come out. I hope his cabby pulled around again and picked him up. I find myself wondering where he was going after the store. Was he drinking alone? Was he at a party but he was the only one sober enough (ha!) to dial the phone and call a cab? Is there an angry spouse or SO somewhere who said “you’ve had enough, I’m not taking you to the store for more. If you really want more you’ll have to call a cab”.
I wish I knew what happened but really, I’m mostly just happy that he took a cab.
