Slow Horses (careful about spoilers, please)

I don’t think this ever had a thread of its own, but I think it deserves one. It is midway through season three now, and I’m still enjoying it. A nice mix between serious spy drama and humor. Kinda depressing to see Oldman as an old man, though.

Aaaaaand… discuss!

Spoilers policy?

Probably better to keep them hidden, in case this thread attracts new viewers. I’ll modify the title.

I… had not heard of this? I like the novels, though, and can recommend them to anyone who likes spy novels.

It is on Apple+

I think it is the best show on tv now; funny, smart, and Gary Oldman.

Great series of books. Mick Herron is one of the very best writers of this kind of stuff ever. I assumed that the TV series, despite starring Gary Oldman, would be a disappointment. Instead it is a perfect representation of the books with beautifully cast players. Oldman is a sight to behold. I hadn’t read about the series before watching the first episode of the first series, so I burst out laughing when the theme song came on. How cool is that?

Written by Mick Jagger, a fan of the books.

I had actually never heard of these, but after watching the pilot, it’s one of the reasons we got apple plus, and we’re really enjoying it through season three. I’ve also read the first two books, and I’m trying to decide whether to keep reading, or wait for years for the TV series to come out.

There are definitely (by the way) some changes from the books to the TV series, but by and large I think they make sense.

I’ve gotten used to consciously ignoring bits that don’t really make sense in lots of shows, excused as the ride is fun. I’ve thought I was doing that in this show only to have it make perfect sense a bit later on, actually being the giveaway of what was going on.

When they tied River up before she flew off. Of course he should have just been killed. I briefly eye rolled. Except it wasn’t just a James Bond style plot device, him escaping and making the call was the plan. Mind you still a lot laid on the line that he was good enough to get to the phone and make the call …

Like many who post here I suspect I enjoy shows that make me go “oh duh I am an idiot that should have been obvious” … and this one has made me say that.

Yes fun characters! I hope they don’t kill off any Slough House Joes this season!

So this season - the “obvious” twist is Chechov’s box. The Grey Files end up in the box River had fumbled at the start. And there was a real conspiracy. /

But I am presuming misdirection?

I’m sure there will be a connection to the case that the season opener woman was killed over.

Am I the only one that just figured out Slough House/Slow Horse? Doh

I strongly agree with the first sentence, but disagree with the second and third. When I first discovered this series, I was thrilled. Devoured all that had been written, and then new ones as they came out. As I recall, I became somewhat disenchanted with the latest couple, such that I may not have even checked out the most recent.

Was thrilled when I saw the series come out - but found the first one - uh - OK. Just didn’t get me engaged the way the first book did from the start. Then there was the usual problem I have of short seasons and long waits between seasons. S2 was one of the books I found less engaging, and the season did not really entertain me.

And, of course, there is the standard problem when you really enjoy a book, no matter how well it is filmed, it is not going to be quite as you imagine it, which can be somewhat disappointing.

I saw a recent review in the paper that S3 has become more graphically violent. Yes, I acknowledge that there is considerable violence occurs in the books, but I’m not thrilled about watching it graphically portrayed on TV for entertainment. I doubt I’ll watch any more.

Yes, although the most recent one or two that I have read can be a little repetitive of the earlier novels. I think this is a fairly shallow vein to mine, and he’s already pulled up the best nuggets. Also, it’s best to read them in order because there are a fair number of spoilers about people who died in the previous books. I don’t think I was up to date on events prior to the last one I read.

I can imagine Oldman in that role as almost no-one else (although I had sort of pictured Orson Welles as he was in Touch of Evil). I’m sure he melts into it and you don’t even think about who the actor is.

There was a lot of panic on local Facebook groups over the summer due to shots being heard near the water tower. It all makes sense now, but I’m not sure why they felt the need to cgi another 2 into the scene.

I…have no idea what this post means?

There was a scene set next to a water tower that was filmed locally to me over the summer. A lot of locals took to Facebook in panic when they heard gunshots and didn’t know it was a film crew. Gunfire is a lot rarer in the uk and people tend to panic.

In the wide shot there were 3 identical water towers, but there is only one in real life.

Watched the first ep last night. I guess it says something about how I consume thrillers that I had ZERO recollection of the book I red within the last few years.
