Afterwards, watch Ted Lasso. Get your money’s worth
Or get a one-month trial of Apple TV+, watch Slow Horses, and then cancel. Actually cancel immediately on signing up and I don’t think it will renew but the month will continue.
Heads-up, season 5 has started.
If you like the series, you might wish to give the books a go. IMO, the first several were about as good as spy thrillers can be. The funny meanness of Lamb was even more blatant. I found my interest in the books dropped off after the first 4-5. Personally, having enjoyed the books so much, I found the show a tad disappointing - tho still enjoyable.
My feeling was that Herron substituted more and more cleverness for less and less plot as the books went along, and I dropped off about the same point you did. Still, the TV series has been fun, I look forward to re-subscribing to Apple+.
So far not as good of a season as past ones?
Yeah, three episodes in and really not much has happened.
I haven’t watched the latest season yet, but that’s very similar to the trajectory of the books.
We just let our subscription to that platform lapse. Caught the first 2 eps - but found I wasn’t very interested.
I wanted to elaborate on this a bit. The first books in the series are great - Herron mixes humor, danger, and interesting plot and characters together. As he goes on, though, he seems more taken with his own cleverness, and it’s all about witty dialogue and a lot of author-heavy descriptive irony/sarcasm. I bailed in the middle of one of the books, quite disappointed.
That’s a really interesting title when you consider the fact that the major interest surrounding horses seems to be how fast they are. LOL
Not only do they seem to be dragging it out, but it seems like the writers haven’t read the books – or decided they could do a better job than Herron. The characters, particularly IMO Lamb and Ho, don’t behave consistent with their previous depictions. When Catherine asks Lamb
“Was that you?”
it was an especially false note. She’s smarter than that.
What finally got to me about the books was all the characters sounding the same. Herron is so taken with his witty repartee that he can’t resist using it in all the dialogue. Nonetheless, I bought the latest installment (“Clown Town”) and will give it a read.
It’s a malaprop of Slough House which is where all the misfit spies are demoted to.
I bet you wouldn’t be thinking that if you lived in the London of the show!
I loved the Tavener/Ho interrogation. A real battle of wits (or in Roddy’s case, half-wits).
Roddy is a fun character but only in small doses.
River casually hitting a dog in the head full force with a fire extinguisher and shrugging when that much force and risk of life threatening injury was clearly not needed? Played for the laugh but he is not clueless in that way as a character.
I’m hoping it picks up.
I just binged the three episodes of the fifth series that have been released and I have to say, Roddy Ho is a complete moron. How did he not realize he was getting played?
By the way, when the villains said the authorities would get a “surprise” when they checked out Tara’s apartment, I expected they would find it was booby-trapped. So a bit of a surprise that it was just a false address. And do we need to blur discussion about the episodes that have already been released?
From my point of view, yes, please blur the spoilers. Many of us wait for all episodes to load
