Slugs keep coming into my house!

Ok, a little background here. I live in a basement suite in an older house. The entrance area is a shared storage/laundry space for me and my landlord, and my bathroom is off that area too. It’s really nice and I like it here, but for the past couple of weeks slugs have been coming in under the door and heading for either the bathroom or the laundry. It mostly happens at night, but not exclusively.

This is grossing me out and driving me nuts! I have always hated slugs with a passion, though I guess I should be happy that they’re small ones rather than giant banana slugs or something. I’ve already stepped on one on my way to the bathroom in the middle of the night. Luckily my reflexes were fast enough that I jumped back as soon as I felt something cold and slimy against the bottom of my foot - cleaning squished slug off of my foot and out of the carpet does not bear thinking about. I am now sufficiently paranoid that any late night visits to the bathroom involve finding my glasses, turning on all the lights and finding a pair of sandals so that if I do manage to step on one, at least I won’t feel it.

Does anyone have any suggestions for keeping the slugs out? I’m going to work on convincing my landlord to put weather stripping on the bottom of the door, but that could take a while and I want a solution now!

Hardware store. $6.00 for stick-on weather-stripping. Your slug problems are over. Cheap at the price.

You could also put a bowl of beer outside the door so they fall in and drown happy.

a line of salt across the various thresholds. table salt.

That was fast. Thanks! I’ll try the salt first, since the closest hardware store is going to close in 1 minute according to my computer’s clock.

Do you have a carpet? Do you see “slug trails.”

I lived in England when I was in high school. My family was perplexed by these odd looking “trails” criss-crossing the living carpet. Where did these come from? Then one night I lay down on the floor to watch TV and squashed a giant slug on my pajama leg. ::barf::

They didn’t come in under the door. They came in a hole that the tv cable passed through. So check your doors; but also check any other entry point.

They’re normally in a straight line from the door, so I’ve been assuming that’s where they come from. I can’t see any trails, but I’m not willing to get down and crawl around on the carpet where the slugs have been to check. In fact, I’m thinking it’s time to reconsider my preference for going barefoot around the house.
