I once spelled “Nietzsche” correctly on the first try, without looking it up.
I successfully carried a precariously positioned pile of dirty plates and silverware to the sink yesterday without dropping any.
On a management seminar one time, we had a timed exercise where teams were supposed to assemble a complicated Tinkertoy structure, that only the team leader (me) had seen, and without providing verbal instructions to the other team members. We were the only team to do it correctly and with time to spare.
I was driving through a residential area onetime and saw a small dog sitting in a puddle of water. I stopped and got out thinking it was injured. I bent down and he bounded to me. Whining and pawing at me. He had a collar on with an address. I googled and found his home and drove there. He sat on my lap the whole way. Shaking and whining. I got there and opened the door and he jumped down and ran to the door. Whining and yipping. The door opened and a older lady bent down and was ecstatic to see him. It was a happy homecoming.
She told me was missing for a week and there was a reward. I didn’t expect or accept it. I spent a total of 10min. ‘rescuing’ this pup. The joy I felt lasted for days.
I used to have a 1963 Triumph Herald 1200 convertible. It was pretty small.
Oh, come on, that’s easy! You just have to remember that it rhymes with “pietzsche”!
I spent the past two days “doing pills.” Most of the pain has faded now, and I can sit back with a little smile on my face at my accomplishment.
To explain: Mr VOW and I are falling apart, in many ways. To assure that we cling to this mortal coil for years to come, we must consume quantities of prescriptions. We also each have a number of supplements we consume for the same reason.
Our prescription plan rejoices when we use our mail order pharmacy, and for maintenance drugs, we can get three months’ of pills at a time. (oh joy…) It is only the intelligent choice to purchase a quantity of pill caddies and fill them up with our daily intake.
Little bit of too much information, I take 15 pills in the AM, he takes 16. He wins the PM award with 20 pills to my paltry 11. Not that we’re competitive or anything.
My incredible, grueling accomplishment was distributing pills and filling eleven caddies, EACH.
Ohgawd, I’m in pain all over again just explaining all that!

I managed to sleep 4 hours with my new CPAP machine before I ripped the mask off of my face.
Damnit, you beat me to it. Except I was going to say Spitfire and I’ve never actually owned one.
I bought a phone on eBay for like $10. I was going to use it for parts. (I need a new screen now and then.) Ad said it wasn’t working, didn’t have a battery or back cover.
It arrived yesterday and it looked in really good shape. Did have a battery and back cover. Just didn’t boot up.
Well, I plugged it into my PC, fired it up into recovery mode, started some super special software and reloaded the firmware. It works … mostly. The two touch buttons next to the home button seem to be flakey but I can replace that subboard no problem.
I’m going to use it to test installing LineageOS on it. Go from Android 4.4.2 to at least Android 7, maybe 8.
I was going to post a picture, but I’m in the office today and don’t have my bookmarks. (Not that it’s a great picture anyway.)
I ordered groceries yesterday.
I like fixing up electronics, e.g., the busted cell phone in my prior post.
The day before that I had restored Mrs. FtG’s old iPod Mini (1st Gen.) to working order. Still trying to figure out the best use(s) for it. Tempted to put a compact flash drive in it to extend battery life and get more space like I did with my old 4th Gen.
My next project was a busted Chromebook. I have been interested in getting a junker one and fixing it up just to see how one of those performed.
So I got a “for parts” one off of eBay and fixed it up. The only real part it needed was a new screen. That was an obvious need from the pic in the ad and it’s surprisingly cheap. Also a keyboard problem that took some time to sort out, etc. Total cost still well under what a “refurbished” one costs.
Anyway, it’s working now and I’ve been using ChromeOS enough to decide: This thing sucks big time. What a horrible interface. And all the “How tos” online don’t work for what I want to do. But it’s lightweight, has HDMI out, etc. and will be good for travel as basically a media player/email tool. There’s also a new Linux-beta add on the Google is testing so it might be useful as a portable Linux-ish box.
For some stupid reason I am drawn to those websites that help you install Windows 10 on a Chromebook. It sounds so interesting. But the speed hit is likely going to be horrible. I found that my model has “multiple issues” after an install so I hope the temptation will die down.
I got out of bed today.
^^ I still have a 5-disc carousel CD player. It’s zehr old. Some years back, it had been sitting in a closet for a while and I took it out to hook it up for my workshop (spare bedroom). What ever CD I played, in any cradle, the disc would stop at the exact same time–like, 12 minutes and 18 seconds–every time. Thought it was a goner. Took the top off and looked inside, but didn’t notice anything unusual. Until I discovered a tiny piece of filament line–for tying cables together–sitting in the transport track, held there by some lube that had gotten hard and glued it in place. Got tweezers, removed piece, cleaned off hardened glue, tested CD: SHAZAM! And it still works!
I’ve lost weight over the last few years.
Years ago, when I was in the Navy, I had to attend a week-long leadership class, during which they had us doing various exercises. One of them was to tie a bowline knot. You had a choice:
- Do it alone without help.
- Do it as a group of 3-4 guys, but without instruction.
- Do it as a group, with an instruction sheet.
- Do it as a group, with an instruction sheet and suggestions from the class instructor.
To my surprise, I was the only person in the room to choose the first option (remember, these are all guys in the Navy, for cripes sake). The instructor raised his eyebrows and said “Hey, your funeral.”
I whipped out the knot in about ten seconds, which, for some reason, astounded the instructor and everyone else. Did I mention that they were all active duty Navy?
Anyway, I felt inordinately proud of myself.
Hey, I have an old 5-disc carousel CD player that does the exact same thing. Was yours a Sony? If so, I found my afternoon project.
Mine’s a Magnavox, but you know there can’t be a whole lot of difference in the basic mechanics. If you’ve got the cojones to take the cover off, in my book, you’re 80% there. Let me know if you have any success.
ETA: you probably already know this, but make sure you document which screws/bolts come from which hole. Even one of four of the same cover screws might have a flaw that keeps it from seating in another “identical” hole and if you force it, you get two damaged holes/screws.
Good luck, Dag! I’m rootin’ for ya.
I, myself, am going to go back to bed in bit. Nap time!
I want to clarify: you said “bowline”, right?
I suppose the Navy doesn’t use ropes as much as it used to.
