Smallville Season 5 Premier tonight!

Wow! What a cool episode. I’ve only ever watched Smallville in little bits and pieces, occasional reruns on different networks. I always thought it was a good enough show to watch when I ran across it, but not captivating enough to follow regularly. Clark’s powers seemed to mostly involve running really fast. Obviously, I’ve missed a great deal.

Ok, so this Lana girl is his girlfriend more or less, right? But there’s a Lois Lane running around? Who’s this Chloe person?

I like that Clark & Lex are more or less friends, but it seems to me, if they’re destined to become most hated enemies, then they should first be much closer, most bestest friends. Right?

Why all the homages to the movies? Does this show more closely follow the movies than the comics?

Hey! Spike’s back! Did we know anything about this character before, or is he entirely new to the show?

Why/how did Clark lose his powers? One minute he’s got powers, then he picks up this coin thing, and his powers are gone. Huh?

That opening sequence was pretty exciting. Has Clark already sprouted a big “S” on his chest, or was that a scene from an upcoming show? How about that rocketing up through the atmosphere thing? Can Clark fly yet?

Just might have to start watching this show more closely.

Wow, you have a lot of catching up to do!

Clark has had a crush on Lana forEVER. They’ve nearly dated a couple of times, then not. It’s complicated, but most of their problems have to do with the fact that Clark has a lot of unexplained (to Lana) weirdness in his life and he doesn’t feel he can be honest about it with her. Watch any random episode, and she’ll complain about it at length.

Chloe is a friend of Clark’s who’s had a crush on him forEVER. See a pattern? She didn’t know about Clark’s powers until the middle of last year, and he just found out that she knows. In high school she edited the school newspaper and was had a big interest in “meteor freaks”, the people around Smallville who gained exceptional abilites/freakish mutations from exposure to meteor rocks, which are actually kryptonite. It seems she’s getting past her Clark crush these days. She and Lana are close friends (except sometimes when they’re not getting along/fighting over Clark, though that’s mostly in the past now) and at one point Lana lived with Chloe and her father.

Lois Lane is Chloe’s cousin, an Army brat who lived with the Kents for a time. Long story, not terribly important. She and Clark pretend they don’t really get along, and that’s how you know they’ll get married someday. Also because you live on Earth and presumably are not a blind deaf mute.

They were much closer friends at one point. It’s complicated, but most of their problems have to do with the fact that Clark has a lot of unexplained (to Lex) weirdness in his life and he doesn’t feel he can be honest about it with him. Watch any random episode, and he’ll complain about it at length. See another pattern? He also has issues with his father that rival Greek tragedy. Lex’s character arc has been the single greatest aspect of this show.

It follows the comics more closely, but not that closely. They’ve done a good job of keeping the spirit of the comics without being a slave to continuity that is constantly in flux anyway. They make lots of homages to the movies because it’s fun, and the creators of the show are Superman fans in general.

He’s new!

If I had a dime for every time Clark has lost his powers… Don’t worry too much. They’ll explain the why and how, and then the powers will come back. That’s not a spoiler, it’s just the voice of experience.

He has a scar on his chest that isn’t always visible, but it’s shaped like the Super shield and has what looks more like an “8” than an “S” in the middle. He doesn’t wear any kind of costume yet though. Clark can’t fly, but in last season’s opener Kal-El could. Confusing? Yes. Kal-El in this context is Clark when he was under Jor-El’s control. It was almost like a separate personality. Clark is aware that this happened, but Clark doesn’t know how to fly on his own. Yet.

I’m sure you can find some good episode synopses that will help. Or buy/rent the DVD box sets. All the previous seasons are available now. Watch out for Season 4; a lot of important stuff happens, but a lot of it is completely awful. Watch out for the rapid-aging baby epsiode toward the end of Season 4. Or skip it entirely; you’ll have missed nothing. :stuck_out_tongue:

I thought Lex had to get his blood changed every few hours.I hate the dead ends on this show

Heh. You’re absolutely right. I’ve only watched the occasional random episode, and I’m pretty sure each time I’ve heard Lana & Lex doing pretty much that.

Ah. So it’s like, “oh, Clark lost his powers again. However will he get them back?”

OK, so apparently I should watch season four then. He actually got to be Superboy for awhile, but only under someone else’s control.

Thanks for the background info!

You know, it’s kind of hard to feel sorry for Clark. I guess he’s supposed to be a bit of a nerd, and this is a teen-angsty kinda show, yet he’s got three hot young women around him at all times, plus a male pal who’d probably like, buy him sports cars & stuff if he’d just, you know, be a real pal. Oi, we should all have such problems!

Oh yeah… I had forgetten about that.

Wait. Was that Lex? I thought it was not-Batman because he had been brought back from the dead. I actually remember Lex having some type of super-immune system. Except for that time he got malaria. Or maybe he was really just nuts.
