I actually liked Cecil the best, but can someone enlighten my clueless little self as to how, exactly, it would be universally useful?

Well, it’s too late for that, since Time Magazine’s Smiley of the Century, :einstein:, is already out of the running.
But since we no longer have the obvious best choice, go with anything but foil or smashie.
Smackie is a joint creation of Saltire and Devilman Palmer (me). Saltire designed the prototype, which consisted of a grimacing smiley with a hand over its forehead, and I polished it up a bit by changing the colors and adding an arm.

But I see that that’s unlikely; so, I’ll be pretty happy if Smackie wins, which seems at the moment to be most likely as it’s in the lead by far (123 out of 229–22.69%).

Oh–and would it be legit for someone to start a post in another forum notifying them of the polls? Not that I’m going to do it, but I wonder if someone should have done so before the first poll started. Maybe Arnold could have stickied a short notice linking back to ATMB or something?
Ah, well, we take what we can get I guess. I think that whichever of the current nine wins, it will be an addition to the boards and will be enjoyed by all, even those who didn’t get to vote.
I suspect that very few people know about these smiley polls - you should advertise.
Most of us never come in here at all. I dropped in looking for something else and found this.
Although the others are wonderful, Smackie is the one we all need.

Scotticher - the Cecil icon could be used as a link to the Master’s colums, with the appropriate title to its right, as if Cecil himself were speaking the question. Kinda nifty, actually.
I think dubious is by far the best, with Smack a distant second. But I still voted for both, since Smack is the most likely to beat the obnoxious smash smilie. I’ll go for anything-but-smashie with pleasure.
It looks like a one-horse race now anyway. But 2nd place will be interesting to watch.

How is this thing figuring out the percentage of votes that the smilies get? Right now, Smack has 137 out of 252 votes, which simple division can tell you is over half of 'em. Yet the poll says that it only has 22.83 percent of the votes. No New Smilies only has 13/252 votes which is a fraction of a percent, but it supposedly has 2.17 percent of votes.
