As some of you may have noticed, I have been gone for about a month (winter break at my dad’s house on the Information Supersidewalk). So, what’s up with these smileys? I come back and see all these weird emoticons, some animated, that I have never seen before. Did they expand the database to include ones like 
that they never did before? How many new ones are there?
And, finally, is it just me, or are the animated ones really irritating?

There are about a dozen threads (OK, maybe not that many) in About This Message Board that cover this question. There’s also a fre threads in the BBQ pit about getting rid of the animated ones.

They upgraded rhe UBB software last Thursday and we got the smilies, a near functional search engine and (briefly) flaming folders.
What else did you miss?
Well, we had a brief MB war with the Left Behind Message Board and a minor troll flood right on its heels. I think the troll extirmination program’s up to date; well, Phaedrus is still his own irrepressible self.

The summaries pretty much cover it. There was an unlovely scuffle to-and-fro with a very fundie BB, there’s been a recent infestation by a bigoted idiot who’s presumed to be human only because he’s bipedal, and of course the smiley things.
Yeah, for a very brief while the folders had small bonfires blazing on them. It made your eyes cross, but was turned off promptly. The smiley thing is being hotly debated. (Hint: Chief Scott went postal, which is a Bad Thing for someone with his access to lethal weaponry.)
